Preface A new edition of a text can mean many things. To authors, it is a chance to try again to get it right and readable, and to revise outdated sections. To teachers and students, the new edition is potentially a more readable and useful text. And finally, it means that the first edition was successful enough that a revision is necessary. We hope potential users will agree that this second edition retains the best features of the first edition and corrects any flaws. As in the first edition of Inorganic Chemistry, we have chosen to emphasize molecular orbitals and symmetry in many aspects of bonding and reactivity. For example, we have devoted an early chapter, Chapter 4, to a discussion of molecular symmetry and introductory group theory, with examples of applications to molecular vibrations and chirality. In later chapters, we have used group theory in a variety of other applications, including molecular orbitals of main group compounds (Chapter 5) and coordination complexes (Chapter 10), and infrared spectra of organometallic compounds (Chapter 13). Additional applications of group theory are included in problems at the end of these and other chapters. The early chapters provide a review of atomic theory (Chapter 2) and simple concepts of chemical bonding (Chapter 3). Following the introduction to group theory in Chapter 4, this theory is applied to the construction of molecular orbitals in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 provides a discussion of various acid-base concepts, emphasizing applications of molecular orbitals to acid-base interactions. Following the advice of many, we have added a chapter on solid state inorganic chemistry (Chapter 7). Chapter 8 summarizes some of the most important aspects of main group elements and their compounds. The rapid development of chemistry of the fullerenes has been recognized in a discussion of these molecules in Chapter 8 and of fullerene complexes in Chapter 13. Chapters 9 through 14 are directed to the chemistry of the transition elements. The first four of these chapters deal, respectively, with the structures, bonding, electronic spectra, and reactions of classical transition metal complexes. We have followed reviewers' advice in reorganizing these chapters into this sequence. For this edition we have moved the discussion of terms and microstates into Chapter 11 so it immediately precedes its most common use, interpretation of spectra of coordination complexes. We have written the section on terms and microstates so it can still be used with the discussion of atomic spectra (Chapter 2) for those who might wish to follow the organization of the first edition. Chapters 13 and 14 provide an introduction to organometallic compounds, their spectra, and reactions. Special attention has been given to catalytic cycles and their application to problems of chemical and industrial significance. We believe that seeking similarities in the chemistry of different types of compounds can be an extremely valuable exercise, and we have therefore discussed some of these important parallels in Chapter 15, placing particular emphasis on the isolobal analogy developed by Roald Hoffmann and on similarities between main group and transition metal clusters. Finally, no text would be complete without a discussion of the role of inorganic compounds in biological processes and in the environment. We have therefore devoted the final chapter, Chapter 16, to selected aspects of bioinorganic and environmental inorganic chemistry. We have chosen the topics and the level of treatment that works well for us. Every teacher has favorite topics, as well as least-favorite ones. We hope that our choice of topics allows potential users to tailor the contents to their own courses. We welcome suggestions for improvements in future editions. In addition to selecting the most appropriate topics, we have attempted to make our text as accessible to students as possible. We have therefore increased the number of examples and exercises within the chapters, with answers to examples included in the chapters and answers to exercises in Appendix A. To encourage use of the literature in inorganic chemistry, we have retained the extensive references in the first edition and have also increased the number of end-of-chapter problems taken from the chemical literature. We hope that these will be useful to both faculty and students using this text. At the end of each chapter is a list of suggested supplemental readings, with brief comments on each. We want to express special appreciation to our students, who have submitted many suggestions for improving the clarity and accuracy of this edition. Miessler and Tarr are the standard for Inorganic Chemistry. Whether you are a professor or a student you should be using Miessler and Tarr for Inorganic Chemistry. (I would recommend getting one of the newer editions). However, the 4th edition add color images, and re-arranges some things. Other than that, content wise, it's the same as the 3rd edition.

I used this book for my undergraduate course in Inorganic. I thought it did it's job pretty well. The explanations were simple and easy to follow. If you need practice problems with solutions, however, you would need supplementary material.

I found the text difficult to read and understand without taking Physical Chemistry.

Inorganic chemistry is an interesting class, and this book is much cheaper to rent or buy than the newest 5th edition. The only draw back is that you need the solutions manual (which sells separately).

Front binding is coming apart but it's manageable. The pages are in great condition (practically new) which is the important part.

Very accessible book, read it from cover to cover. The material isn't always the easiest but I feel that the book describes very visual concepts and computational concepts extremely well. Best chemistry book I've had, though this is the only inorganic chemistry book I own.

My children love this book! They are never tired of the story. Great illustrations. The only suggestion is that it could be more sturdy. I brought several copies for my nieces and nephews. A great book!

Great short story to read aloud to introduce folktales!

I loved this story growing up, having heard it in a few different versions from my mom or others, and is only reason why this review isn't one-starred. When I saw this book at the library, naturally I got excited and opened it. The first thing I noticed were the terrible illustrations. It was basically a character on an almost blank sheet with no background. It was ugly, to put it plainly. I felt like I was reading some 5th grader's collage assignment that was carelessly done in 5 minutes. An adventure story about talking animals confronting Heaven's injustice and THIS is what they come up with for the illustrations? Seriously?My other issue with the story is that it is told differently, weakly. Differences are to be expected and even welcomed in the retellings of a classic story, but not if they don't make sense. Frog's companions are supposed to have definite strengths and weaknesses that counter everything Heaven throws at them. In this version of the story, the animals have no developed strengths nor weaknesses so that the final confrontation has no wittiness about it. No rhyme no reason, the animals just kinda fight and suddenly: The End. The writing style is very dry. -__-This book butchered everything I like about this story.

It was a legend unlike any other legends and had been passes down by generations. Every time that the people received rain, they remember the story about the toad which had said to be the uncle of heaven. A little ugly toad and dare to become uncle of anyone even the heaven ? How is this happened ? It was a long time ago and there is a drought in the land. The field become dry, every trees died, the animals had nothing to eat or drink for there is not a shingle drop of water. For days, the animals groan and complain but no one would do anything. This is when Toad step in and make up his mind to go to heaven and asked heaven the reason why... enough with me telling how it ended. Read this wonderful book and find out. You won't regret it and every time you see rain, you will know how it all happen.

Helfer's monumental guide to grasshoppers and their relatives was originally published by William C. Brown many years ago. Fortunately Dover reprinted this classic. While behind in taxonomy, this book is still very useful and by far the most complete guide available. I only wish they would revise it, but I doubt that it will happen any time soon.I used this guide extensively while I was co-authoring a manual of grasshoppers in New Mexico and found it then to be the best and most accurate publication (despite the dated taxonomy) for both amateur and professional orthopterist. Helfer's book is still the only source for a non-technical overview of camel crickets, mantids, walkingsticks, and some others for North America and holds its own against more up to date books on grasshoppers, katydids and crickets, despite the lack of color plates.If you are interested in the hopping, chirping and scuttling inhabitants of your part of the world, you can't go wrong in obtaining a copy of this marvelous book.

The information in this book is at the level of a good field guide, but more complete than any could be. This is a great reference for the naturalist or field biologist involved with grasshoppers and their kin.

Will this book guarantee you a 100% on the Solaris 10 exams? No. Will it help you pass? Very likely yes.I took the test, using only this book and the optional 494 study question package. I studied until I could score 90% on the review questions consistently. I passed with 70% on the upgrade exam. I admit that I don't use the advanced features of Solaris 10 on a regular basis. I've never worked with zones, zfs, snapshots, and only rarely use the SMF. I can't fault Bill Calkins for my own lack of experience. But this book got me up to speed enough to pass.Obviously, the book can't give the answers to the actual exam questions. It doesn't try to. The book does a great job of covering the material that will be on the exam, and the scenarios you will be dealing with.I must disagree with the reviewers who said none of the content in the book was on the exam. They must have taken a microsoft exam by mistake. On the Solaris 10 upgrade test I took, ALL THE MATERIAL ON THE TEST was covered in Calkins' book.

First off, I'd just like to say, it is fun to turn this book over and see the old retail sticker from Borders still on it, for $64.99 when I just paid $26.98 brand new delivered from Amazon. I totally love Amazon.*****That being said, I did a lot of research before selecting this particular book. Its the perfect reference to compliment the Solaris Online Learning Center courses. I often have to pause the playback and go look up a topic online to get more insight into it. Solaris takes some getting used to if you're coming from the Debian or RPM builds. I've already looked up a few topics I've been studying lately for LPI and a couple of things I had to contend with on the Linux+ exam, to see how much detail the book gets into, and it seems to be exactly what the Doctor ordered!The CD and end of chapter test questions are great bonuses, but I would buy this book again even if it didn't have those.

I passed the both exams using this book with flying colors, but then I have been doing Sun UNIX for 20 years. I can confidently say this is an excellent review book and even a good reference aside for using as a study guide. The CD exam had many questions that were on the test, amazing. But most important, not just passing the exam, the book provides an in depth understanding of Solaris 10. I have many of Bill Calkins books on this subject, different OS releases, and you can see he has evolved his book into an efficient concise guide for Solaris. There are plenty of review tables and step-by-step examples.He does the best coverage of have seen on Rules file keywords for Jumpstart; you have to dig on the Sun site for such documentation. The book did lack enough content for Intel Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) and there were a number of questions on the exam (x86 Solaris) on this subject. However, you can't find material on x86 subject easily or in one place, so this is the best there is on x86 Solaris.The book covers zones in just 20 pages and is complete. Step-by-step examples are provided for different configurations such as NIS, NFS, network interface, AutoFS (excellent explanation and step-by-step), jumpstart, logical volumes, zones, service management facility and its recovery, backup/restore including recovering the boot block, access control list (ACL) commands, etc. which can be used as a reference too. I also recommend the book for a trainee learning Solaris.

If you already pretty much know what you're doing, this is a good reference for preparing for the test. But you have to be able to overlook the issues like typos and wrong entries.

I bought this book for my Solaris 10 Upgrade exam - result, passing score! However unless you are an experienced SA, I would recommend not using this book as your sole study guide. There are a few technical inaccuracies in addition the material fails to delve deeply enough into certain key exam areas such as Sol on X86. Post-exam, I view it as a nice Sol 10 reference to keep around.

I read this book cover-to-cover. It was so poorly done. It's almost like the author has no understanding of the SCSA exam at all. I took both SCSA exams and neither one had any questions that were related in this book. If you want to pass the exams, I highly recommend that you not read this book! Poor, poor, very poor.

This book is great for the exams. In my case I was looking for something to help me upgrade my solartis certification to 10. I went through the other book for the exam written by Paul Sanghera but does not have a lot of info. This book is by far well-written with a lot information you need to learn Solaris 10. If I had a choice to make I will go for this one. But with my rule never used one source to study for certification. If you have money get this one first and then the other study guide.Overall, I give 5 stars and recommend this to anybody serious about solaris 10.
