The liar by Nora RobertsStarts out with Shelby going through her late husbands records, health records and bills. Things start to click the light bulb on. Now she knows his past, some of it.She has nothing to raise her 3 year old daughter on as she owes taxes, overdue bills and has no house or cars or anything. She's able to consign clothes and sell jewelry which wasn't what he told her they were worth, arts and books. She arrives back home to TN and others are after her about money her husband owed them as another name. She found money and other things in his safe deposit at the bank.Like hands on your nose, the trails, familiar surroundings and the hometown feel she is welcomed once returning home. Don't like that's there more pain for her to endure and more struggles. Griff is a handyman who likes her and her daughter and they do hit it off.Love the words of the day! Hot steamy sex scenes and more identities to go with who she thought was her husband.Fast paced action, mysteries and romance.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

I just want to start off by saying how much I LOVE Nora Roberts. Jewels of the Sun was the first "real" book I ever read after finishing with things like Babysitter's Club, Sweet Valley High, etc... and here I am exactly 10 years later and I still count down the days until her next book comes out so I can buy it immediately. She is the reason I became a writer.I've noticed something in the past couple years, however, and that's that Nora Roberts has somehow fallen into this writing pattern that she just can't seem to get out of. A lot of authors discover a formula that seems to work for them and tend to stick with it and there's nothing wrong with that. Nora just seems to be following that pattern way too closely. Woman (very rarely a man) gets scorned, set up for the "main story line", she/he forced to go home and find solace in family, meet a guy (girl), fall in love, a bit more about the actual story line, quirky secondary characters, couple has a problem that's easily solved, climax to the main problem, couple resolves all of their issues and then the end. Now, I have absolutely no problem with happy endings. In fact, I love happy endings. It's just that the happy endings in Nora Roberts' stories aren't always so plausible anymore. In The Liar, Shelby's husband dies and leaves her with a child and massive debt. She finds out he was a lying, cheating bastard and she goes home back to her family to recover and quickly meets a man and falls in love, picks herself up, yadda yadda, predictable ending and they all live happily ever after. It was all very predictable and I knew exactly what was going to happen before I even read the first line. I figured it out when I read the description on the cover and that would be okay but the way we were all lead to that ending just wasn't satisfying.Anybody who's ever read more than one work by Nora Roberts knows how much she loves her redheads with wild curls but there just isn't any deviation anymore. The grandmother and mother could have been the exact same person and it wouldn't have made a difference. Most of the time, actually, I had to stop and think which one was which. The grandpa and dad were completely useless. I saw no value in either of them other than to show the readers how totally awesome and in love these couples are after so many years. The brother, Clayton, was also useless. He served no purpose, was hardly in the book at all and I had to wonder what the point of his scenes even were. Emma Kate was supposed to be this best friend who went all the way back with Shelby and I felt no familiarity with them. There were no inside jokes, no comfortability, nothing. I saw my best friend last week for the first time in two years (since she moved to Europe) and we fell right into the same groove; same jokes and we could convey messages just through look. I know they had a falling out but then everything was, supposedly, okay again and I felt nothing. Matt was Emma Kate's boyfriend and Griff's best friend. I left the book feeling like he was a total stranger. There was no chemistry between he and Emma Kate and no camaraderie or "bro-ness" between he and Griff. I felt like his sole purpose was a reason for Griff to have moved to Rendezvous Ridge.Too many characters as well. Big family, great but I didn't need to meet every single one of them. Nobody calls their cousin "cousin johnny" or "cousin vonnie". I have anywhere from 75 to 100 cousins/second cousins (from my dad's 9 siblings and my mom's 4) and I can barely keep track of all of them and have never called them "cousin so-and-so". That whole "your mother's sister's son" thing was unnecessary when "cousin" would have done just as well. The dialogue was exactly the same no matter who was speaking. All the women spoke exactly the same and I often had to stop and follow the dialogue again to see who was saying what and, even then, I was still sometimes confused.Griff was absolutely the best character out of the bunch. He had a great sense of humor, he was sexy and sweet and (supposedly) totally in love BUT I felt like there could have been more. There was one scene in which he showed us something besides amiability and, if you weren't looking closely, you might've missed it. The so-called problem between he and Shelby served no purpose and I think it was just there to try to mix their relationship up a little bit because it was going too smoothly. The relationship between Griff and Shelby had some potential but it moved much too quickly. They had a couple dates and he was ready to dedicate his life to her. They were absolutely not ready to get married in the end. Some of these characters were also just outlandishly unrealistic. All the "good guys" were perfect and all the "villains" were comically cartoonish.I know Nora loves family but not every family has to be all kissy and huggy and playful with each other. I have a big family. One of my brothers and I don't talk. The rest of my siblings and I get along wonderfully. If I ever came up behind my mother, put my arms around her waist and rested my head on her shoulder, we'd both feel awkward and embarrassed and it's not because we don't love each other and aren't close but because not every family does that. Please understand that, Nora.I understand that Shelby was played all these years but, seriously... you didn't suspect a damn thing? Absolutely nothing?? Come on, he wasn't THAT good of a con man. Also, he got a vasectomy and you guys had tests done but you didn't ask to see any of the results?Shelby's husband ran off with $30 million, a PI follows her all the way back to Tennessee, someone gets killed in the parking lot of her work, the PI gets killed, a horribly dangerous man escapes from prison and breaks into Shelby and Griff's houses and steals information and nobody thinks to be just a little cautious? These people are mind-numbingly stupid.About halfway through the book, Shelby finds out that Richard (or whoever) had been married before... which invalidates their own marriage. She doesn't owe his debt anymore. She's not his wife and owes nothing that she didn't cosign for. And if that wasn't enough, he's alive at the end which means that even if their marriage had been legitimate, she STILL doesn't owe his debt anymore now that he's found alive.Richard was just ridiculous. In the beginning, he's portrayed as a man who was supposed to be very good at what he did. He lived with her for 5 years and she didn't suspect a thing, he managed to con all of these people and even his own partners, fake his death and get away with it. He gave me the impression of practical, cold, and efficient. What we got was inefficient and just plain dumb. Everything he said was some insulting comment about Shelby and where she's from. This hick little town, this s***ty road, these dumb houses, you stupid girl, you simple girl, you moron. He just wouldn't shut the hell up about it. Also, I know you don't love your daughter but threatening to sell her? Even the worst criminals in prison are offended by pedophiles. That took it too far.Richard's so called "wife", Natalie what's-her-face was Woman Richard.Melody was so pointless, I don't even understand what she was doing in the book. I mean, seriously, waste of time and words. Everything that happened with Melody was needless and childish. People can be cruel, but she just seemed like a little girl having a tantrum and was just an excuse for Shelby to punch someone. The only one I might've found interesting was this Jimmy Harlow but we didn't get to see enough of him or know enough about him at all.The scenes with the FBI served no purpose. How the hell does Shelby text such clear messages with one hand and her phone in her pocket? I'm the same age that she is and if that was what was going to save my life, I'd be screwed. And just one more thing... I could've done without so much setting description. Nora loves flowers and that's perfectly okay but I have no idea what a rhododendron is and I don't need to know every single flower that's planted everywhere that Shelby goes. The descriptions of the house were typical of Nora (ie, warm colors, big fireplaces, gorgeous kitchen, library, full-of-nature backyard). I actually had the urge to skim through some of the setting descriptions because it was just too much.I really hope Nora Roberts takes a break for a little while and stops working on cruise control. She's producing books like she works the line at Ford and doesn't seem to care anymore what's in them. This story had some real potential but was ruined with cartoonish characters, overdone plot and solution, and way too much setting description.

PLEASE RESEARCH YOUR SETTING! I love Nora Roberts books, normally... but the whole time I read this one all I did was try and catch errors in the setting. As East Tennessean, the setting was what drove me to purchase this book (for $12 I might add). The setting was a fictitious town of Rendezvous Ridge near the Gatlinburg/ Maryville area. When Arlo (if that was his name) was arrested, the sheriff said he would be going to Bledsoe Co jail...well thats 108 MILES AWAY! I have never been arrested but I think that usually you go to jail in the same county in which you were arrested. In this story would have been either Blount or Sevier, since that is were you wanted us to believe that story was taking place. Also, there were several times in the story were the characters were running to Memphis (or in Bitsy case just returning), that is about 400 miles ACROSS the state. I have it very unlikely that Bitsy would have missed the welcome home party because she was in Memphis the previous evening at a wedding, but back home before lunch...again 400 MILES AWAY! The wealthy in East TN don't go to Memphis to shop for the weekend like the antagonist was planning...they go to Atlanta because is it much closer and safer. Either the author (or someone who was pretending to be Nora Roberts) only knows two places in Tennessee, Gatlinburg and Memphis, or she just plain did not care to get it right. If you are going to use real towns in the story please have some clue what you are writing about, otherwise just leave those details out of the story. They neither added to nor would they have taken away from the plot or character development. All they did was point out your mistakes.Bless your heart!

I love, love, love this book. It's an excellent tool to add to my my speech therapy sessions with preschoolers, as I can target letter recognition, vocabulary, imitation, following directions, counting, pretend, breathing and relaxation among other skills. I would highly recommend this to parents and educators.

My 3 and a half year old loves to sit down and do a few poses every day. She screams in excitement and runs to the carpet in the living room when I say, "do you want to do some ABC yoga?" Not only is the book reinforcing the alphabet and vocabulary, it is sharpening her listening skills and coordination. The book also encourages a child to use his/her imagination. The little yoga poems and the artwork are tastefully done. I can't say enough great things about this book. Thank you for writing this wonderful book.

This book is wonderful! My 4 year old and I read all the time together, but as of now, he rarely takes a book out by himself. Except for this one. I'll catch him taking this book off the shelf by himself, opening it up and doing stretches/poses for about 20 minutes at a time. He's even started to create his own poses. Thank you!

we got a copy of this for my son when he was 1 and he still loves it at 2 1/2. We do a few poses every night before he goes to bed and he started showing his teachers and friends at school so we bought his classroom a copy as well. Nice that it incorporates yoga, the alphabet, and a little story with each pose.

Great illustrations and a fantastic "drawing board" to develop a children's yoga class from. I have used this when teaching childrens classes, (chose three pages to work from, showed the children the asana, then demonstrated, then we all did it together ) Great teaching tool!

Caution: this is just the GUIDE, and needed to buy the actual book separately.

My Grandaughter is 3 1/2 and tries to do the positions with her ABC's.

We use this in our classroom of preschoolers with special needs and it has been tons of fun. The kids are much more flexible and braver with balancing than we are! The illustrations are beautiful and the poems are sweet while being instructional. My only small qualm with this book was that certain letters are only given one position while other letters may have four. We were hoping to have a session dedicated to a letter of the alphabet, but in those cases merely review previous positions.

Kelly Johnson is definitely a legend in the aviation industry. He was responsible on the development of more than dozen of platforms; most of them were pioneering at time. It is remarkable to learn how fast and cost effective these were developed. For example, one aircraft was designed over a long weekend while Kelly was in a business trip at the UK. The revolutionary U-2 was designed by only ~50 engineers. Leading projects nowadays takes at least a decade of development and costs Billions of dollars. It seems tempting to compare between this book and Ben Rich's "Skunk Works" book. I must say that Ben Rich's book is a better choice in my opinion. Throughout his book he admires Kelly capabilities and achievements (it is interesting that Ben is hardly mentioned in Kelly's book), and provides lots of details, not just technical, on the major projects he was involved in. "Testimonies" from colleagues are included in Ben's book, describing the common practice and the state of mind of the people involved in these projects those days.Taking the SR-71 Blackbird, Ben Rich's description is much more interesting, informative, and exciting, than the rather technical description of Kelly Johnson.I would definitely recommend for aviation fans reading this book, but if you have to choose only one between the two – take Ben's "Skunk Works".

A solid autobigraphy from the creator of Lockheed's "Skunk Works". Kelly Johnson pulls no punches and his autobiography shows his personal character throughout. However, his telling of the tale is limited by his own outlook. He gives short shrift to others sides of the story in the battles to create warcraft that the military and our country needed.A well-balanced counter-point is to read "Skunk Works: A Personal Memoir of My Years at Lockheed" by Ben R. Rich which continues the story and fills in things Kelly misses,Well worth the read as long as you keep his magnificent persistence and focus in mind.

The legendary Kelly Johnson in his own words. So much good stuff here, but I wanted more. The first of the book, covering his youth, education, and prewar years at Lockheed is filled with satisfying detail. But the pace accelerates by WWII. So how did the Constellation acquire its beautiful, sinuous shape? What was it really like to ride as a passenger in one of the Mach 3 blackbirds he designed? There's a good blend of his personal life folded in to the narrative, and a fair bit of his management style and philosophy. Having spent my career in aerospace I agree with much of what he says... but what he takes for granted is that step 1 starts with an absolute design genius like himself. With that as a given, the design teams can indeed be wonderfully small. One reason the pace accelerates towards the end is that he's had a second triple bypass as he's writing the book, and is doubtless feeling the pressure of time. But I give thanks that he used his precious time to give us this book. It's a must read for people who love airplanes.

"More than My Share of it All" is the autobiography of Clarence "Kelly" Johnson the iconic and prolific chief Engineer and designer at Lockheed Aviation from 1933-1975. He contributed to the designs of more than 40 aircraft. He is only one of two designers to have won the Collier Trophy for greatest American aerospace achievement of the year twice. (The other was Glenn Curtiss.) A companion book is "Skunk Works: A Personal History of My Years at Lockheed" which is the autobiography of Ben Rich another Collier Trophy winner. It chronicles advanced development at Lockheed from 1950 - 1990.Kelly Johnson was an organizational genius. His "Skunk Works" based on Kelly's fourteen points for overcoming bureaucratic inefficiency using a small team of highly skilled, self-motivated individuals is recognized universally as the preferred method for time-critical advanced research. These two books describe how Kelly - and then Ben - were able to deliver cutting edge aviation technology on-time and under budget. As a former aerospace engineer I consider these books required reading for anyone contemplating a career in aerospace. I would add one other book: "Quest for Performance" by former NACA scientist Lawrence Loftin, is a comprehensive history of aviation design for the non-technical reader. I have all three of these books in my Kindle library.Johnson's book also provides insight into Kelly the man. He took personal responsibility for the fatal accidents that are inevitable when pushing boundaries. His deliberate demeanor clashed with the flamboyant Howard Hughes with whom he collaborated in the development of the Constellation. There is one encounter where Hughes took the controls during a checkout flight and nearly killed everyone onboard including Kelly. He never flew with Hughes again.Kelly considers the SR-71 his crowning achievement. As an engineering triumph it has no equal. The SR-71 still holds the absolute speed and altitude records for air-breathing manned airplanes. His F-104 holds the low-altitude absolute speed record. It is unlikely that these records will be broken anytime soon.Kelly Johnson was the consummate minimalist. His clean functional designs are aesthetically pleasing - some like the F-104, Constellation and SR-71 are breathtaking. As with living sculptures such as birds and whales an airplane's shape is dictated not by the whims of stylists but by the laws of physics.

Excellent autobiography of an person who was intimately involved in the development of many planes from the P-38 to the SR-71from early WW II to as recent as the 80's. Gives you an brief inside look at how planes were developed and tested as well as the character of the guys involved in the process. Gave it as a gift to my son. Said it was his favorite this year.

Love, love her poems and there were some funny gems in this book, but over all I could take it or leave it. She has a wonderful ear for conversation and this book is a series of short stories - some just a chapter no more than a page and a half long - written around a dialogue between her and often a taxicab driver. Clearly Naomi Nye is personally compassionate and thoughtful - all of which are obvious if you know her poetry. I just find the short stories much less engaging.

I am reading this book through for the second time. Nye has a way of introducing me to the world around me in a whole new way. Her truth is a balm. Not always a happy truth but truth nonetheless. She has become one of my favorite authors and the kind of person I would love to call my friend. I feel fortunate to have found her works.

It was a good adventure/travel book. The experiences she had were more than interesting. Having had one or two of them, I could see where she was coming from. Some of them were a little chancy, but she always came out okay if not on top. She knew how to handle the chancy situation. Fun reading and highly recommended.

Each story is uplifting and amazing. Most of us don't think about how our experiences weave together into a rich fabric that illustrates the connectedness of humans. Read it! You'll be glad you did.

This is a book for anybody with a traveling bone. Naomi Shihab Nye finds beauty in the simplest moments experienced while in taxis and connects them to her life and yours in ways that will surprise and provoke one to pay more attention to what we might often NOT let resonate with us. People you don't know really do have a great deal to offer, especially when you most need it, or least expect it. Inspiring words with a great perspective and voice.

I love Naomi's wise musing all related to her many cab rides! Enjoyable and insightful read. I had already read many of her poems so I shouldn't be surprise to enjoy these short stories!

This latest book by Naomi Shihab Nye is warm and funny and endlessly entertaining. It is always such a pleasure to be in the company of Naomi Nye as she looks at our world. In this collection of vignettes, Naomi takes us traveling across the US and around the world. From the back seats of taxis and the lobbies of hotels we encounter peculiar, heartwarming and just plan wacky taxi drivers and clerks. Human nature is the subject and in the hands of Ms. Nye it is fascinating. I recommend the friendship between a cat and his driver in San Antonio.Irresistable.

This book is definitely a unique and easy read. I believe that Naomi Shihab Nye really wrote the chapters so the reader could feel as if they were apart of the story, experiencing the same things as her. I think any person who reads this book will automatically become more open minded about different things. Every chapter felt like it was heart felt, and had a good message. Overall, the book was sweet, funny, and interesting.I recommend this book to any person who likes a good non-fiction story with a taste of adventure. It is definitely for the curious type of reader. It didn't take too long to read, and I never got bored while reading. Each chapter was a new story I was excited to read about.
