_Light and Life_ by Michael Gross is a brief overview of a variety of instances in which light - from the Sun and other sources - and life on Earth have interacted. A rather short book - not counting the suggestions for further reading it, is 149 pages - I found it an enjoyable, quick read. Though at times it got a bit technical, for the most part it was accessible and interesting. After a brief preface describing some very general observations as to why light is important in understanding life on Earth and as to why the author decided to explore this topic, the author divided the book into six chapters, each with a different focus. The first chapter really dealt with astronomy rather than with biology. In this section Gross explored the Big Bang, the origins of stars, the formation of the solar system, and the structure and functioning of the Sun. I found this chapter pretty general, mostly things I had read before, though a good overview. I did find his discussion of the left over radiation from the early universe, the cosmic microwave background, or CMB, interesting. Though its existence was predicted in 1948 by physicist George Gamow, it was only discovered 17 years later by accident, when Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson at Bell Laboratories were trying to determine the source of the excessive background radiation picked up by a microwave antenna that they had designed to receive satellite transmissions. A two-page discussion on neutrinos, while a bit off-topic, was also quite interesting, where the reader will learn about the massive devices built underground in attempts to observe these elusive and extremely difficult to detect particles that come from our Sun and other stars. The second chapter was much more in line with the book's title, dealing with photosynthesis, including its evolution, the effects it has had on the geology, climate, and evolution of life on this planet, and how it is accomplished at the chemical level (this latter subject did get a bit technical but there were some helpful diagrams). Also discussed is the ozone layer, its formation, its importance to life, and the threats posed to it by pollution (with some discussion as to why certain pollutants interact with ozone). Chapter three was quite interesting, veering away from the Sun and Sun-related topics, focusing instead on the world of bioluminescent organisms. One interesting point he made, when discussing ecosystems that form around hydrothermal vents, seemingly independent of the Sun, is that ultimately they still benefit from photosynthesis due to their reliance on oxygen, which is present in usable quantities thanks to the activities of photosynthetic organisms. Gross made many interesting observations about bioluminescence. It is found in a rather diverse group of organisms with little apparent rhyme or reason. It is fairly common in the ocean, virtually absent in freshwater. Various groups of worms and insects can glow, but no spiders. Among vertebrates, only fish use it. There appears to be 30 non-related bioluminescent systems in nature, possibly meaning 30 separate incidents of independent evolution. Gross discussed the idea put forth by William D. McElroy and H. H. Seliger that originally the first such system did not evolve to produce light but rather to detoxify the oxygen that was introduced into the atmosphere by cyanobacteria (as most bioluminescent systems use oxygen). Later on, mitochondria were able to use and dispose of the oxygen much more effectively. The book explored how light is produced in organisms and its many possible uses, including seeing, sexual signaling, alarm signals, bait, to deceive predators, and, what was interesting to me, "no use." Sometimes light appears to be an unwanted byproduct or at least produced for little understood reasons, such as is the case with luminescent fungi. The many uses of bioluminescence by humans were explored. One interesting use related to detecting landmines; all landmines leak small quantities of TNT; researchers have developed a strain of bacteria (one that naturally feeds on this chemical) so that it would glow under a UV lamp. Chapter four explored biological clocks and movement guided by light, including photokinesis (light causing increased activity), phototaxis (light being an attractive signal to which an organism will run towards, phototaxis affecting both orientation and displacement of an organism), and phototropism (as when a plant grows or bends towards light). Also discussed in this chapter was the importance of sunlight to human health physically and psychologically. Interesting was a discussion as why peoples native to the tropics have darker skin; it has nothing to do with skin cancer, which only develops late in life, well beyond their reproductive age. Rather, it has to do with vitamin D synthesis (dark skin and low light would make for problems) and the destruction of folic acid (less often damaged in dark skinned people). Chapter five was quite interesting, dealing with the evolution and structure of eyes in the animal kingdom, though largely focusing on the human eye. I learned many things I did not know, including about why cataracts form, color blindness (first systematically analyzed by an individual who suffered from it, John Dalton, more famous for the modern concept of the atom), saccades and trans-saccadic memory (saccades are rapid eye movements performed unaware to us up to three times a second, and the trans-saccadic memory creates continuity between images before and after a saccade, though studies have shown very interestingly that this memory is more schematic than detail-oriented; fascinating reading), and binocular rivalry (what happens when the eyes are presented with two separate, incompatible images, resulting not in a blending of the images or two images but rather an alteration of two competing images at apparently random time intervals, though this is to some extent influenced by conscious thought). The final chapter was one of the briefest, providing some highlights of Sun worship through the ages and past thinking about light and vision. We've come a long way from the ancient Greek philosopher Empedocles' idea of "vision rays."

In The Lost Tomb of King Arthur Graham reveals the true history and final resting place of Britain’s most famous legendary king.” (Andrew Collins, author of Göbekli Tepe: Genesis of the Gods)“Another must-read for anyone interested in the often inconvenient truth of history from the audacious and persuasive Graham Phillips. This book will challenge much of what you think you know about Arthur--but in a good way!” (Lynn Picknett, coauthor of The Templar Revelation and Turin Shroud: In Whose Image? the Truth Behind)“The history of King Arthur, and whether he truly existed, has been studied by many scholarly disciplines--it is an immense jigsaw puzzle. In this book, Graham Phillips brings these pieces together to form a coherent picture of who the historical Arthur actually was. Always engaging and informative, this book penetrates the mystery of one of England’s iconic heritage figures.” (Storm Constantine, author of The Magravandias Chronicles)“Just when you thought the legend of King Arthur was a fairytale, Graham Phillips shatters the illusion with historical facts, discoveries, and theories that challenge everything you thought you knew about the once and future king. Compelling read for all questers of the truth.” (Andrew Gough, writer, presenter, and editor of The Heretic Magazine)

The Lost Tomb of King Arthur by Graham Phillips is excellent. Mr. Phillips is an enthusiastic amateur searching for the lost grave of the mythical King Arthur made famous by countless books and movies. Most, if not all, “real” historians and archeologist have long rejected the famous king as only a romantic myth, but Graham Phillips decided to doggedly search out every remaining inkling to determine if the ancient post-Roman king did exist and, if he did, where he might be entombed.Mr. Phillips believes he has turned the trick and actually found not only that the king actually existed, along with Merlin – not as a wizard – but also his final resting place. He has managed to obtain the assistance of the National Geographic Society, and successfully uncovered connecting clues that were overlooked or discounted by the professionals.Graham Phillips searched the archives of many a dusty book of lore, and trod the actual physical locals of the forts and battles in his pursuit of the real history of the kings of the Britons. Normally, this would be dull reading; however, Phillips has managed to turn this dull and dusty quest into an enjoyable and fascinating read. It was a lot of fun following his various clues. The author is able to bring real life to the subject of the post-Roman period in England and easily explains what happened after the Angles and Saxons arrived. The overthrow of the Britons is a torrid story filled with heartbreak and conquest, fleeing queens and kings, and the contest for power. This is history at its best. For those of a more cynical bent, Mr. Phillips does base most of his search on linguistic associations. He is an expert at putting together clues from ancient languages, fascinating in itself, but somewhat limiting as far as archeology is concerned. Since there are no records of note from the time following the departure of the Roman Legions, Mr. Phillips has to follow the scantiest of clues to his goal. Did he lose his way? Mr. Phillips admits much of the evidence is thin. Those looking for hard boiled substance, such as stone carved lists, headstones with particular names, signed histories with exacting places catalogued written in 500AD will be sorely disappointed. After all, the history is lost because these archeological items and historical writings do not exist. If they did exist there would be no need for Mr. Phillips.I think the author has done a credible job of tracing through a spider web of almost nothing to a reasonable conclusion about King Arthur and his final resting place. The threads are faint, but no historian could have done better. He is a brilliant thinker and his ability to connect traces of fact to actual artifacts, poems, and stories is remarkable. Is he right? Until more is known it is impossible to tell, but his story is gripping, fun, and insightful in ways everyone can appreciate.Highly recommended.AD2

I will say right from the start that 2 things are quite obvious about this book. 1) It is entertaining and 2) The author thinks quite highly of himself, though he does not consider himself a historian, an archaeologist, or even a professional textual researcher. The best way to describe it, is when someone gets a little knowledge in a subject, and instantly knows more than their professors at University, who are obviously not as smart as them. This is the feel one gets - especially if they ARE a historian, or archaeologist, or anthropologist. However the book is topically entertaining, and other then some roughly constructed rhetoric, reads like a great Jr. High 'historic novel'. So if you want a light read on an interesting topic, written by a professional writer who believes they are far more knowledgeable then the actual experts in the field (and which WILL make any serious scholar belly-laugh), this is your book. If you also believe that ancient astronauts formed the Maya civilization and the pyramids in Egypt, or that archaeology and field research is just like the Indiana Jones movies - GET THIS BOOK NOW! It gets 4 stars for entertainment (Comedy) and 2 stars for content and quality of research - so 3 stars on average.

This book is well researched and then reasoned from the facts, with due diligence given to possible counter arguments. While the archeological evidence has yet to be attempted, this is the most cogent case for the existence of Arthur I have read.

An incredibly well considered and documented journal of another search for the historic King Arthur, Camelot and his tomb on the Isle of Avalon. Phillips makes a very compelling case through careful linguistic detective work and meticulous documentation and cross-referencing of multiple sources. While this is an academic work primarily, it has enough personality to hold a serious reader. I was reading it as an addition to existing research I'm engaged in and in that task, it added a great deal to my knowledge of early England, Wales and Anglesey. If you have an easy time with Welsh and Brythonic pronunciations and have a serious interest in the Arthurian Sagas, then you'll really enjoy this book. The color plates in the paperback version are worth every bit of extra cost. The book is also well covered with internal maps to aid in mentally retaining all the information. This is truly a storehouse of ancient locations and names and the author does present a great deal of evidence in support of his conclusions. Add a star if this kind of reading is one you enjoy.

I couldn't put this book down, its fabulous! Mr. Phillips has written an incredible book of academic, yet in an entertaining manner that makes it a pleasure to follow him through the pages of his journey. Two decades of research and clever investigation to piece together a legendary story that goes beyond the romantic sagas that we are all so acquainted with. He breathes life into the real man behind the legend, re-writing history with his thought provoking theories.Thank you Mr. Phillips!

I really dislike how the maps show the Holyland, Paul's journeys, etc. without showing them in respect to the continent of Africa. In the world map Italy is shown as if it is no where near Africa not true. Egypt is shown as if it too is no where near Africa. The maps are a misrepresentation of the truth. WHY WHY WHY won't the publishers of these maps show the continent of Africa and the continent of Asia. There is NO Middle East continent. It irritates me to the MAX. I am going to keep the map to use it as a teaching tool to demonstrate to my students exactly what I mean about publishers trying to exclude Africa from the Bible. Shame on you Middle East is a political name not a geographical continent.

This is a great map for anyone studying scripture. I am in a bible study and we are studying Isaiah all year long. These maps are extremely helpful to put names with places, and adds so much more to my bible study. I also love the fact that the overlays tell you where these ancient cities are named today. Every time I turn on the news and hear about different events in the Middle East, I can reference what those places were 2000-4000 years ago, and what historical event took place there. It's very fascinating! Rose (the publisher) also sells a pocket version for $4 each. It's not as extensive as this one, but because I loved this one so much, I bought the pocket version for my entire bible study class. There is also a then and now "deluxe" version that has even more maps and more reference material.

I traveled to Israel last year and the maps helped me to understand better how Jesus, the Apostles, John, and all the New Testament characters traveled, what it may have looked like back then. The maps were invaluable in seeing what the landscape, topographically, may have looked like in the Old Testament stories too. It especially helped when seeing the Roman ruins, canals, churches and temples.I enjoy looking at them today when I'm involved in a Bible study or just reading the Bible. It's makes seeing where important events took place seem more real. It helps me understand better, knowing what has transpired in modern history, why the changes in borders and countries have taken place.I recommend it for Bible readers and travelers both.

This Bible map book has clear plastic overlay that show where certain places mentioned in the Bible are located today! (It is also available as a set of overhead transparencies, which is ISBN 0965508234.) This spiral-bound book contains 12 full-color Bible maps, each with a clear plastic overlay that shows modern-day cities and countries. Includes the following maps: * The Middle East during Old Testament Times * Overlay of modern-day Middle East * The Assyrian Empire, Babylonian Kingdoms and Persian Empire *Overlay of same areas with modern-day countries * The Holy Land during the time of the Old Testament * Overlays of United Kingdom, Divided Kingdom, modern-day Israel and surrounding countries * The Holy Land during the time of Jesus * Overlay of modern-day Holy Land * Paul's Journeys (Roman Empire at AD 60) * Overlay of modern-day Mediterranean area. The print is relatively large for an Bible atlas (not giant print, but not as bad as some Bible atlases).

Excellent map selections. Even modern areas, such as Golan Heights, West Bank, Gaza Strip, and so on are clearly oulined. also, coastal cities, Paul's routes, entire Red Sea area, Arabian Sea, Haran, Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, Persian Gulf, modern places in red, ancient lands in black, 12 Tribes in Canaan, Empires and Kingdoms, Jesus' travels area, and so on.

What a great idea.... the transparent overlays, to compare boundaries. There was one set of pages that had too many layers, so I had to make a copy of the bottom layer and put it under the top layer. I think this is really good for understanding what it's designed to help you with. I recommend for anyone who wants to see. One area people need help with is understanding the Northern kingdom, samaria, and Judea the southern kingdom.

I can't count the number of times I have used these reference maps. I have been doing a study of Old Testament history, and these maps are great in helping me locate places mentioned in the OT. I also make use of the Rand-McNally Bible Atlas which I purchased from Amazon to help me understand the particular time in history that a particular book from the OT is describing. Highly recommend each of these references to any serious student of Bible History and Geography.

I love the modern day map that shows where modern places are, relative to the places the Bible talks about. This little map is a fold-out map, and can easily slip inside a cover of your Bible, to keep it handy, for looking up the ancient places. Some of the smaller places are not shown, and that is about the only negative I can see.
