"Harry G. Frankfurt, 2017 Charles Homer Haskins Prize Lecturer, American Council of Learned Societies""One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2016""Frankfurt has issued a clear challenge to the champions of equality."---Julian Baggini, Financial Times"The volume should be required reading for candidates of both parties."---Stephen L. Carter, NY Post"With this book, as in his past work, Frankfurt has shown why it is so important to question common terms that are too often used reflexively. Regardless of one's own views on the past, present, and future of inequality, On Inequality is a salutary effort to help readers pause and think about the beliefs that motivate our rhetoric."---EF, Econ Focus"On Inequality may unsettle those fuzzy-minded liberals who know they are committed to a more equal society but are not sure why. Given Frankfurt's convincing proof that bourgeois, academic ethics cannot sustain a critique of inequality, these liberals may find themselves turning to intellectual traditions that offer a more radical, systemic critique." (Los Angeles Review of Books)"The best discussion of the moral aspects of income inequality that I have read recently." (New Boston Post)"Harry Frankfurt has once again shown himself to be a sensitive, humane and highly original philosopher. Anyone who is disturbed by the rise of inequality should grapple with what he has to say about why it is troubling. They will learn a great deal by doing so even if, in the end, they do not find his arguments persuasive."---Paul Weithman, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews"In an accessible, informal tone, this book explains essential techniques that students, postdoctoral researches, and early career scientists need to write more clearly, efficiently, and easily." (Lunar and Planetary Information Bulletin)"Economic equality is one of today's most overrated ideas, and Harry G. "Economic equality is one of today's most overrated ideas, and Harry G. Frankfurt's highly compelling book explains exactly why."--Tyler Cowen, author of Average Is Over"Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is doing well, if not good, by reducing the debate about equality to resentment of large fortunes. He should read Harry G. Frankfurt's new book On Inequality. It is so short (89 pages) that even a peripatetic candidate can read it, and so lucid that he cannot miss its inconvenient point."--George Will"Relevant, persuasive, and a pleasure to read, this is the sort of philosophy that ought to be more widely available."--Gideon A. Rosen, Princeton University"Many people who worry about inequality will want to read this wonderful book and will be profoundly influenced by Frankfurt's clear and forceful arguments. In part, he argues that if we are preoccupied with equality rather than with alleviating poverty we will be estranged from our own lives. That insight alone is worth the price of the book."--Richard Robb, Columbia University"Social justice issues are at the forefront again today, and it's important that we get the goals right. Frankfurt is not alone in arguing that equality is beside the point. But his important book, infused with characteristic insightfulness, is written in such a way that those who need to hear the message might actually listen."--Jason Brennan, Georgetown University

It’s another short book by noted philosopher Harry Frankfurt, most famous for his excellent “On B...” (full title of the book not allowed here, apparently). On Inequality, though, is way below par. Even for a short book it is exceedingly repetitive, and the basic argument could be made in a few pages. According to Frankfurt, inequality is not, per se, morally objectionable, and the real problem is poverty. He argues that the two issues are logically independent, even though they are demonstrably empirically correlated, given the structure of our society. He also suggests that a primary focus on inequality, rather than on poverty, is both ethically misguided and pragmatically more difficult, since it is easier to convince people that the poor shouldn’t be poor, rather than that the rich should be less rich. I find myself inclined to concede the logical point, and perhaps even the pragmatic one, but Frankfurt’s analysis falls far short of the realities on the ground. A more in-depth, two-part commentary over at my blog, platofootnote dot org.

His clarification that poverty is the real issue. however his use of the theory of utility and the law of diminishing utility is often confused tho valuable. Best he leave such notions to those who understand the broader implications rather than erroneously cherry pick from the notion of utility. his writing is clear, organized and allows the reader to keep central ideas in mind front to back. It is well worth the read.

This is a really short book, less than 100 pages, which pages are not even full-size to begin with. I read it on a flight from Miami to New York and still had time to do the "hard" Sudoku puzzle in the airline magazine. But it is well worth reading. Simply stated, the author,a professor of philosophy at Princeton who previously wrote a popular book called "On Bullsh*t" bluntly rejects the pursuit of economic equality as a morally valid goal. He characterizes such a pursuit as "alienating" a person from his or her own self, by defining said person by reference to what others have or lack. Using economic equality to define a person's moral status means that if one has more income or wealth than others, one should feel guilt, and if one has less, one should feel victimized. This means that people can not be satisfied or happy based on their personal assessment of their own lives and that is why he defines the economic equality frame as "alienating". For some reason I don't quite understand, he eschews use of words like "envy", "jealousy" or "covetousness" to describe that state of mind.He also discusses attempts to justify economic equality based on the theory of "diminishing marginal utility" which postulates that the marginal value of an additional dollar to a person who is already well off is less than to a person who has substantial needs. First, he notes, that such an argument is really an argument for a basic level of sufficiency, not ultimate equality. Once both persons have a sufficient amount, and what is being compared is two persons' desire to purchase a discretionary item, the proposition is not credible. The marginal utility of moving from an income level that uses frequent flyer to upgrade to first class to the income level that uses private jets may be huge, because it enables one to bypass the TSA nightmare and spares one unnecessarily long waits in airports. In the same vein, he disputes the measurability and comparability of marginal utilities ab initio. He astutely offers the example of series of things -- products, services and content. Think about collecting (e.g., comic books, baseball cards, first editions). Or watching a TV series, such as Breaking Bad or the Sopranos: how important was it to see the last episode vs one in the middle? Or the greater value of attending the championship game at the end of a season. In each case, the last purchase or experience in the series can be the most desired, not the least valued. Life can't be reduced to simple formulas with linear slopes. Merely because marginal utility can be observed in hindsight or across a population as a whole does not mean it can be predicted with accuracy as regards the future or any given individual. See "ecological fallacy".There is also the fact, not raised by the author, of differing life cycles of consumption, work and leisure. One person may work extra hard in high school, college, and his or her prime working years, and may save aggressively. with the goal of consolidating a large block of leisure and savings in retirement. Another person may elect to enjoy a more dispersed leisure throughout those earlier periods and find himself or herself working later in life to make up for it. Think of the famous marshmallow experiment. But how does one justly define, at any point along the timelines of these two lives, what is "equality" between them? The two most significant lines of criticism of the "equality" imperative that are missing from this book are the impact on child-rearing and the failure to account for disparities in work and productivity.Regarding child-rearing, a world of perfect equality dis-incentivizes parents from investing extra time or resources in their children, given that any fruits of above-average development of the child will not be retained by the child, let alone benefit the parents indirectly, but instead disseminated among the population to maintain equality. So why expend extra effort?Regarding work, a demand for outcome equality in a world where people have unequal inputs of talent and work ethic, are unequally clever and productive, and make decisions of unequal merit and wisdom, merely substitutes one form of inequality for another, disparately coercing the best workers, the most productive, the most in demand, dramatically more than the least, unwisely alienating those who make the greatest contribution to the society and invariably incentivizing those in the middle to work less and under-develop their productivity in reliance on the prospect of receiving transfers of the surplus generated by the most productive. In Lincoln's famous remark, "It is the eternal struggle between these two principles -- right and wrong -- throughout the world. They are the two principles that have stood face to face from the beginning of time, and will ever continue to struggle. The one is the common right of humanity and the other the divine right of kings. It is the same principle in whatever shape it develops itself. It is the same spirit that says, "You work and toil and earn bread, and I'll eat it.". To achieve perfect equality among a population with different talents and efforts requires the extermination of that population's freedom to act in ways that generate unequal outcomes. Thus, the only place where there is perfect economic equality is a cemetery.Last, the contingency of the "equality" demand should be remarked upon. It is, with rare exceptions, not proposed on a global basis, among all people, as one would expect a moral principle, such as "thou shalt not kill" to be laid out. It is analyzed and demanded, state-by-state, and is thus contingent on borders. Scandinavian nations are "good" and "more just" because they have less inequality among their population than the US, which is "mean" and "unjust" because it has greater inequality among its population. That the Scandinavian nations are highly unequal compared to sub-saharan Africa is somehow not considered of great relevance to moral inquiry. That the US has many more immigrants and first-generation residents is rarely considered. It is tremendously incoherent that the proponents of "equality" accord borders, which are artifices of humans and thus malleable, as givens that frame their moral analysis, while more fundamental and natural facts, such as differences in talents and effort, are disregarded entirely. The demand for "equality" should be recognized not as a moral demand but a political one, when it is confined to the outcomes of the population within a given polity.

I like this. I would like it better if it was a 5k word essay. I get the point already and several thousand words add nothing to the premise. Still a good read.

Frankfurt gets me every time. I loved this book as well as "On Bulls***." In both works, he does a wonderfully thorough job of analyzing the issue from a great variety (may I daresay ALL?) angles, even if they seem to be contrary to his main argument. That kind of transparency, objectivity, and grasp on reality is frustratingly uncommon these days. Wonderful to see Frankfurt filling in where other philosophers have lazily failed. Frankfurt is a primary example of someone who uses logic to reach a conclusion, rather than using logic simply to support a conclusion he already had. Always looking for more work from this guy!

This short treatise is worth engaging for members of both the political left and right. The strongest portion is certainly the author's deconstruction of the standard economic assumption of decreasing marginal utility from wealth.

Was given as a gift...he liked it...

This the third of the popular Jeff Resnick Mystery series --- the third this reader has enjoyed and the only one that comes with a vacation in Vermont. What could be more tempting? Ms Bartlett's engaging writing style, seemingly effortless dialogue, avoidance of cliche, and steady evolution of story are the foundation of her mysteries. What tempts this reader to read on --- is the author's uniquely creative imagination and plots. Her stories are genuine, ring true, do not stretch our credulity. They offer a slice of everyday life tainted only by the central character's newly evoked (by violent personal trauma) "ability" to sense strong emotional events before and after they occur. Ms. Bartlett's stories simply "fit-in." and make sense ... as they offer up the unusual set of circumstances which bind them and generate the mystery. Not an easy task. These stories amble forward and sometimes shocking and unnerving events and tragedies occur (alright...they always occur). Jeff Resnick discovered in book one that he must figure out what led to the central tragedy to literally be given peace (of mind) and an end to migraines caused by the devastating emotions his radar flashes upon --- that horrid events provoke in those involved. But his skill at defining and untangling a set of circumstances surrounding a brutal death are not straight forward. And his makeshift process is the author's highly skilled mystery story. If Jeff could "know" what happened and see "who done it" at the start ...there would be little point or interest whatsoever to these mysteries. Instead Jeff fumbles forward with the help of his long estranged half brother Richard, a physician and wealthy man by inheritance not practice; his sister in law...Richard's long time companion and nurse - the sensitive Brenda who finally agreed to marry him in a past book in the series; and Maggie...Jeff's pretty girlfriend - trying to leap from temporary bank employee to freelance magazine author with an eye for interior design. And these tiny bits --- (the author's considerable skill in making the critical elements "simply" part of the background and general "noise" in the evolution of a tale is highly refined...and respected by this reader) --- these tiny bits unravel to create a damn good, believable and engrossing mystery story. I look forward to the next.

This was a special book to me in this series. I've read all the Jeff Resnick books and found them to be in a class by themselves. The paranormal theme is not far fetched, on the contrary, due to Jeff's horrendous mugging that took place months ago, his psychic abilities seem quite believable. This story begins with Jeff and Maggie being asked by Maggie's friend, Susan, to do an article on the Sugar Maple Inn. Susan and her husband Zack have put all their finances into making a go of this B&B. Located next to a ski resort they could make quite a bundle during the skiing season. The problem was getting enough paying guests to enable them to renovate the rooms beforehand. That's where the idea for this article comes in. Maggie doing the writing and arrangements of the rooms while Jeff takes all the pictures. The photography equipment costs money and Richard, Jeff's brother, was there for Jeff for that endeavor. But something doesn't seem right to Jeff. Negative vibes keep popping into his head and he decides to call on Richard for assistance. At first I was already for Jeff to be totally abandoned in this psychic world that's now a part of his life, but I was especially pleased when that was not the case. Richard not only chose to answer his brother's call for assistance but actually was communicating with Jeff on every angle of what Jeff's psychic senses were showing him. That's the special quality for me in this book. Jeff was not abandoned and his brother, Richard, proved that over and over. They worked as a team delving into the unknown as to what lie beneath the surface of Jeff's sense of urgency.Maggie also played a vital role as their relationship rose to a higher level. They were working on their magazine article project together, communicating about what their take on the guests as well as Susan & Zack were as well as her accepting Jeff's psychic abilities in order to solve this mystery. If you want to read a book that opens up the possibilities of another dimension in a mystery then you may want to consider "Room at the Inn" and the Jeff Resnick series.

This was the 5th book in the Jeff Resnick series I have read. I started off with Murder On My mind and downloaded each book as soon as I finished the one before. Although this book starts off a little slower than some of the others it is nonetheless intriguing. I love the main characters and feel I have gotten to know them pretty well. This book kept me guessing to the end and thoroughly engaged in the story to it's ultimate conclusion. I recommend this book and all others in The Jeff Resnick murder mysteries. L.L. Bartlett has become one of my favourite authors.

I think this is the last Jeff Resnick for me. I think that by book number 5 the characters should be more fleshed out by now, Jeff keeps calling Maggie 'his lady' (possessive) and it just doesn't seem like a natural way of speaking to me. Other inconsistencies in this book have to do with his belief in his ability as a 'psychic'. His brother refuses to come when Jeff calls and then chastises him for not believing in his abilities when he gets there. I am also tired of the type of resolution that occurs in these books, he always gets the crap beaten out of him and I mean, come on he is former military and he has NO moves at all? My dad is 83 former military and he STILL shoots bulls eye with a rifle EVERY time. I just think that these characters are not evolving fast enough and I am thoroughly sick of the whiny 'i'm so poor and your have all the money' theme. There is a clear line between being a bum and being down on your luck due to whatever and needing help from someone who wants to help you. I think more than anything I find the writing very flat.

An informative book. This book is splendid. I inclined such huge numbers of successful things from this book. Continuing to learn and hone my networking skill. Hopefully I will improve a lot and very well managing networking system as my own future profession field. No Doubt book is very good for understanding networking protocols. The language in the book may be a little challenging for someone with English as their mother tongue. There are lots of misspellings and the grammar could be improved here and there, but this is not a big issue for me as a Norwegian. I was really astounded by perceiving what number of imperative recommendations accumulated in such a short book. Creator completed a phenomenal activity. I'll most likely prescribe this book to my loved ones. I really appreciate this book. Thanks to creator.

This “to the point” book was a useful restore of what was hidden somewhere in my head about computer networking. I did not need a lot of time to read it, and I regard it as an intro to a deeper dive into the subject. The language in the book may be a little challenging for someone with English as their mother tongue.
