The book itself is not bad, but the technology described in it is VERY out of date and stale. This book is also available online for free on http://www.masonbook.com

I've worked on enough PHP and other lousy web code to have cringed when I read the title of this book: Embedding Perl in HTML with Mason. "No!" I cried, "don't cross the streams!" By the end of the book, I was feeling much more at ease (but I still cringe a little at that title).Mason is (though it seems debated) a cross between a lightweight application server and a very lightweight templating system. Requests go into Mason, which dispatches them to handlers and produces a response. The handlers and dispatch are simple but powerful: they use ideas object-oriented programming and allow the programmer to easily abstract and reuse code parts. It seems like a very powerful system, but its programmer-facing interface is fairly simple. The book walked through all the basic Mason concepts (request, autohandlers, dhandlers, components, methods, etc.) quickly, but with sufficient explanation and demonstration to make everything clear. Chapter 8 walked through the construction of a web and database application, using all the major features covered so far. The features had already been so clearly explained that I felt comfortable just skimming through the chapter. After that, the book began to cover some more esoteric concepts. Mason is made up of a number of classes: an interpreter, a lexer, a compiler, and a resolver. A programmer can write his own class to implement any of these components, changing the system to suit his whims. At the end of all this, I felt like I could really make Mason do a lot of cool things, and that it was a nice-sized solution for a lot of problems. (I still don't see myself actually /using/ Mason for anything, but now I know it's not so bad, and I know how to use it.) The book was well-written, had the right amount of depth, and was the right length for end-to-end reading. I'm glad I read it.

I am using Mason for about a year. Then I saw the Mason book. My first tought was: "Why should I buy a book about Mason - The online documentation is excellent...?".But even the introduction chapters of this book gives you new ideas how to get things done. Starting with the second half of chapter 4 every Masonsite developer should take a close look. He will find a in deep discussion about every Mason feature - and more (e.g. The Bricolage-CMS-Appendix).I my opinion there is no discussion "to buy or not to buy" this book. The only question is "when".On the one hand this book can be a bit boring for "new" Mason user and as mentioned before the online documentation is very good. On the other hand if you have your first mason-site done and read this book you will have very likely the urgent desire to rewrite some code. But this is a common perl problem: "There are many ways to get things done."I dislike the "Example" chapter. One of the big advantages of Mason is the possibility to seperate perl-code and HTML. This ist not very well done within the example-site.Conclusion: This book is not needed to get in touch with Mason althought usefull - but if you are really starting to deploy a site I strongly recommend this book.

Far from being just a reference, this book explains the conceptual framework behind Mason. The main idea of which is creating reusable components or building blocks to generate each element of your web site. This simple but powerful idiom is extremely useful in creating both small and very large dynamic web sites. The book is aimed at intermediate to advanced Perl programmers, although a bright beginner could pick the material up with a little help from the Mason community's very helpful mailing list. This book is not a tutorial. Instead, the authors devote a long chapter (chapter 8) to the analysis of a fully functional web app with full source code. I preferred this approach however because it helped me focus on the application as a whole rather than silly pedantic examples that lack context. Before reading this book, I had some experience working on a site that used a "home-brewed" templating system, but all the while I knew there had to be a better way. After reading through the first four chapters, I was able to build a rather sophisticated site and have been quite pleased with both Mason and this book. I fully recommend it.

But.. it is a little too short. Not really but I would have loved to have more book. The book covers just about every topic. I personally would have enjoyed to have more examples in each area. They made sure that there is at least on example for each topic. They even give some information about other competing products and about products that use Mason as it's base (for example Bircolage - I think I spelled that correctly). I am really glad the book to come out, it is a perfect addition to my collection of O'Reilly and Perl books. Thanks for a great book!

As a longtime mason user (2 years, private and commercial use) I didn't have to think about buying this book. Dave Rolsky and Ken Williams, both core developers, introduce you to the concepts behind HTML::Mason and its many features which really make the life of a web developer way easier.... Even if you're already familiar with mason this book will serve you as an excellent reference. If you haven't heard of mason yet and you're into web development and Perl is your language of choice you should also definitely have a look at this book and mason in general.

Apart from being clear and well-written, this book is also the sum of all the knowledge of the Mason community, written by two of the developers of Mason themselves. If you already use Mason, it's a must have.If you are new to Mason, try it first (it isn't difficult at all), then read the book. From my point of view this is an excellent technical book.

This is a good book. I had no idea about mason but helped me get right up to speed. Recommended for anyone who wants to get their foot in the door to learn mason.

Club Shadowlands breaks the vital foundational BDSM pledge to "safe, sane and consensual" participation in an almost criminal way, foisting a first-ever BDSM scene on a hapless, obviously uninformed, innocent, vanilla young stranger who wandered in literally "out of the cold" in search of a dry place to wait out a rainstorm! A ridiculous I've-never-heard-of BDSM club situation devolves into a shameful mismanagement of a misunderstanding by a supposed Master Dom who immediately conducts an I've-never-heard-of-such-a-stupid-club-rule public punishment scene. This travesty is committed, even more absurdly, by a man who we later learn is a trained Psychologist and who also has these (fantasy-only) skills to read emotions and minds in others. I won't go further into the ever unfolding absurd events that follow, especially since a few simple questions to ensure the newcomer has understood the rules she was asked to read would have prevented the entire sad shebang. Surely a bit of practical caution exists in real life clubs?!I think the entire BDSM novel author community should rise up and require the Club Shadowlands author Ms. Sinclair to totally rewrite the first four chapters of this book. The BDSM portrayal as normal and acceptable is horrific to the BDSM reputation and could turn away the uninitiated in horror or greatly mislead newcomers into severe personal danger. Apparently the author has revised this book and not even corrected/strengthened her introductory statement to readers to be careful if new to BDSM. This is an unacceptable BDSM misrepresentation left hanging out there in the ether, and worse, by an award-winning best-selling author whose book will be read good or bad. It must be remedied.(I would have assigned only one star to this book, but I did force myself down off the emotional cliff the first four chapters forced me onto, and after reading the rest of Club Shadowlands, enjoyed it as a series of sexual encounters between two strangers who are starting to know and appreciate each other as individuals.)

Wish I could give this 5 stars, but I can't. I have it as a firm 3.5, which is a shame because it's a good book and well written. With so many couples (but mainly women) ending up in the ER because of curiosity, I feel BDSM authors have a responsibility to actually do some research. When authors like Shayla Black and EL James are capitalizing on alternative sex lifestyles without bothering to do any research, I take comfort in authors like Cherise Sinclair who do. I actually recommend those curious about D/s relationships to read the Shadowlands series because she does an excellent job of explaining things in a way for the novices to understand. But I think that's why books 1 and 2 weren't a total home run for me.Unlike the later books which had suspense, angst, intense romance and extremely complex characters, the early books laid the groundwork for explaining the lifestyle...and future storylines. I doubt there are any better books for newbies than Shadowlands 1 & 2, it's great characters along with great explanations of alt-lifestyle basics, but it makes it just a tad DIY/how-to for those who aren't newbies and who are just looking for a romantic story.Beth and Nolan's story, as well as their novella are (and apparently will remain) my favorites. After the 10th time reading Protecting His Own, I wondered if I'd ever be able to get to the point of being able to read it without feeling a hole in my chest or turning into a blubbering idiot. I know what's coming...heck, I probably know it by heart, and yet I still can't take the risk of reading it in public.Plus, getting glimpses into Kari/Dan, Jessica/Z in the subsequent books are always cherry on the cake moments for me. So obviously I formed an attachment for the early-on-the-series characters, they just don't grip me as much as the later works. Could be because there's just so much going on in the others that they suck you into an emotional hurricane of worry and pain and bittersweet happiness, whereas the first two books were strictly about the main characters, learning about the lifestyle and following their burgeoning relationships.Make no mistake, just because I am not as in love with the first two books as I am with the others, doesn't mean that they shouldn't be read. It just means 'hurry up and read these books so you can get the full impact of the other stories and unfolding romances'.I think the Shadowlands is a must read series, I thank Ms Sinclair for giving us these wonderful characters, and I will never understand how Christian Grey got a movie and Nolanman did not. I can only think that this is what comes from an entire generation of women the world over growing up on Harlequin/Mills & Boons where we're made to believe dating a guy who treats you like crap but then professes his love is what romance is supposed to be. Here's to hoping that writers like Ms Sinclair will play a big part in putting a stop to that adolescent and dangerous way of thinking. I've seen way too many women in hospitals and domestic violence shelters who thought a man who treated them like they were nothing loved and respected them.

Mind reading Dom? Ok, I'll play along. Stranded in the middle of nowhere storyline? Not creative, but ok. Punishment by complete strangers while the "loving" mind-reading Dom calls her brave even though she clearly doesn't want it? WTF, no. Crappy writing aside, this felt uncomfortable to read. I couldn't keep reading because no woman in her right mind would sleep with a guy who so disturbingly manipulated her and violated her trust. Fantasy is one thing, but this is just gross.

I have been intrigued by the world of BDSM but any time I researched that world, it was always depicted to the fullest - sub being tied, gagged, flogged, and in the most painful and compromising positions. I read this book on a whim and was sucked in from the very beginning, I was actually shocked and dismayed when I clicked for the next page and then realized that I had completed the book. This and utter did a great job (in my eyes as a complete novice in this area) at introducing the world of BDSM and some expectations. I loved the characters, real life people and not billionaires with a person of no self esteem. Jessica was a full figured, accountant that had the normal reservations that many people would that have curves given that society now sees beauty by how thin and slim you are. Master Z is a person I would love to meet, a guy who can read your body signals and understand your wants and needs; he is the perfect man indeed and then he has a little kink to him. The book was a gradual build, not just wham in your face l; which made it all the more believable. I found myself relating to Jessica a lot and now I wished this place was real and that I might meet my own Master Z! Lol. Thanks Ms. Sinclair for this great read!

The bulk of this book seems to be rehashed information from another counseling test prep book (maybe the NCE? some exam that has its focus on the academic side of preparing for the field) - almost completely irrelevant information for preparing for the NCMHCE. And then the very brief section of simulations has poorly formulated scenarios, answers, and explanations for the "correct" answers.I wouldn't even suggest getting this book if you can get it used for pennies - in fact it seemed to me that it could point you in the wrong direction in how to prepare for the NCMHCE. It definitely did nothing for me, other than add to my test taking anxiety.I've now taken the NCMHCE (May 2018) and did quite well - my primary source of study was the online counselingexam.com which I HIGHLY recommend - and just focus on the simulations. On my exam the simulations were very similar to those on the website. I was averaging in the mid-70s on both test sections ("information gathering" and "decision making") after a month of counselingexam.com (binge studying on the weekends when I could - a few hours here and there during the week) - and my actual score was significantly higher on both sections. And I was terrified. And was pissed off most of the time as I was studying (I still don't think these tests are good indicators of counseling ability). What I was told by my supervisor turned out to be totally true (for me) - we are studying to learn how to take the test - figuring out how the test makers are trying to get us to distinguish between their concept of the distinctions between "information gathering" and "decision making"If you graduated from a relatively decent counseling program and had well rounded experience during your internships, then just learning how to take the test will be sufficient. Especially true if you take the test after a year or two of work in a community mental health clinic with a well rounded case load.Anyway - good luck - and steer clear of this book!

The first part of this study guide is very helpful in providing a summary of concepts and theory.I'm SO disappointed in the simulations. I have completed 4 of them and have already found 3 MAJOR errors (2 of which list a different option in the exam (question option was "financial debt") versus the answers (answer was listed as "depression"). Poor editing/review as these are obvious errors that should have been caught. It's hard enough learning the material when the information is consistent and correct; these errors add confusion and concern during the studying process. The other issue is that no information is provided as to how high your scores need to be to pass each simulation. All other simulation exams online and otherwise, specify what score you need to obtain to consider passing the question.

This book contains multiple errors. Not just spelling errors but errors in the Test Simulation portion (answers don’t match some of the options given, for example.) I can’t believe no one else has noticed and written an accurate review. I don’t trust a test prep book that can’t accurately spell check and fact check.

I’m finding this study guide to be well organized, full of great information, and truly a guide for identifying where I need to spend more time focusing my efforts. The practice exam section is awesome explains the correct and incorrect responses in detail. Great book for a great price!!

Ordered the kindle version - it was a test study guide for the CECE, not the NCMHCE. Scam.

My study guide is the NCMHCE Study Guide 2018.Having previously paid much more for AATBS I find that your guide is more straightforward and accurate. They still tell you you will be provided with a pencil and paper. I give you a five.As I said above, I can compare you with the more expensive option, and I favor your approach.Scot Spencer

I liked how it summarized many aspects of counseling. I wish that there were more test simulations, though, and that furthermore a better way of scoring to find out of I would have passed the simulation.

The information in this study guide is not well put together. Several of the answers were incorrect according to the DSM 5. Additionally, the study guide is misleading as evidence by tell you to select one answer when the are more that one answer. Some of the information was good, but as a whole this Study Guide (NCMHCE Study Guide 2018 and the NCMHCE Practice Questions) was a great disappointment. I truly feel that I have wasted my money to some degree. I strongly recommend that someone edit these resources.

I visited England a few weeks ago. Having read this book, I was better-prepared for what I was going to see! I wish that I'd had more time to view gardens - I got only 7 in in 10 days. This book would be a wonderful guide to anyone preparing to tour gardens in England. I wish that I'd read it before selecting the gardens that we did.

The English Country House Garden by George Plumptre has expanded my bucket list of gardens I would love to visit in England. It conveys how each garden achieves its affects using their particular gardening styles by comparing a wide variety of England’s great public and private country gardens. Exploring how the gardens achieve harmony, the book covers how plants are grouped together, their forms, color and structure, the book also considers how they interact with the estate’s land features and buildings. Each garden reflects the personalities of those that tended them and lived in the houses they complement. Where some gardens were created in garden “rooms,” structures other designs drew on structures, shapes and colors in relation to each other or to enhance the features and homes they accompany and others were designed to be inclusive of the surrounding landscape. The gardens are classified under diverse garden styles: classical, historical, country house, personal creations and contemporary designs. Under these chapters are the Hidcote, Sissinghurst, Great Dixter, Montacute House, Rousham House, Tyntesfield, Rodmarton House, Folly Farm, Broughton Castle, Goodnestone Park, Kiftsgate Court, Trebah, Cothay Manor, Helmingham Hall, Spencers, Charleston, Exbury, Thorp Perrow, Felley Priory, Lullingstone Castle, Scampston Hall, Seend Manor, East Ruston Old Vicarage, Broughton Grange, The Old Rectory, and Gloucestershire gardens. The photography is remarkable and exceptionally demonstrates the words points about the gardens in each chapter. They can, however, be difficult to see in the Kindle edition. I wish there were more of them but, based off of the side notes, I expect the final version will include more.I received a copy of this book from NetGalley for a fair and honest review.
