At first glance, this book seems obvious. Don't be a bully, a cad, a jerk, a witch. Got it. What I liked about this is that the author is not afraid to challenge his own position because he knows the jerks will. I also liked some of the statistics behind it, notably that one jerks has to be offset by five good people and that a single jerk can be a 30% drag on the rest of the team. It was a quick read and an important one.
Despite the somewhat rude title (don't let it stop you!), this is a well-written, well-researched book. If you are dealing with a difficult co-worker or boss, this book leaves you feeling empowered. I found the information on how to recognize those who are truly toxic most helpful, as well as the actionable advise on how to keep your sanity and protect your health and welfare. It was also important to read about how a toxic attitude is contagious and easily spreads throughout an organization if not dealt with quickly.I also enjoyed the many real-life stories from different organizations.I'd say this book is a must have if you have to work with people who (i) each time leave you feeling flat and empty, humiliated, and belittled and who (ii) have a tendency to treat their subordinates poorly. I have read countless books on productivity, but this might actually be the most important and impactful one of them all.
Very good book about dealing / understanding difficult people and how not to let it effect you and your behavior. Also makes you more aware of your own behavior and how it is perceived.
I can use some of this for myself and my organization. All of this makes sense. What's difficult to do is how to change a toxic workplace that you are unwilling to leave.
This book is helpful for those who deal with challenging behavior patterns in the work place or in volunteer organizations, and also as a self check to keep oneself from becoming that person! I found this entertaining and enlightening! Wish I could buy 20 copies and make them required reading!
I liked this book overall, not a long read, which is good for me. Great conversation starter wherever I went, the dust jacket was missing (because I bought it used here on Amazon), so it was bare, but the title is on the spine. It's small enough to fit in my purse, but when I laid it on counters, it really drew attention. I thought it provided good insight into why a**holes do what they do, and I liked the distinction between occasional a**holes and the predictable frequent ones. I found it entertaining and found much truth in the coping strategies. I can think of a few of my coworkers who might borrow it. We are surrounded in our workplace.I didn't think it deserved the one star ratings, but to each his/her own.
I was overwhelming disappointed. What a waste of money and I never give poor reviews. The book lists pages, chapters of examples with no tips on how to deal. Truly a shame, and this book was so well recommended, maybe just due to shock value of the title.
I use this for professional development of my subordinate leaders. So far, so good. Its a great reminder that leadership does not have to be toxic.
