So let me get this straight. We have a CDC that manipulted data in order to deny the link between the Agent Orange used in the Vietnam war and the cancers of our soldiers so that we wouldn't have to care for them? Then the CDC pays a mercenary Dane, Poul Thorsen, to manipulate the "Danish Studies" to show no link between the thimerosal mercury in vaccines and autism so that "autism" could be taken off the list of side effects of vaccine damage so that we wouldn't have to pay out the billions owed to the almost 5000 kids with autism that were petitioning the so called "vaccine court"? And then the CDC promotes Colleen Boyle, the sleezeball in charge of both these travesties, to head up the NCBDDD (National Center of Birth Defects and Developmental Disorder)??? And we have a Department of Justice that has indicted this other sleezeball, Poul Thorsen, for the million dollars that he stole from the CDC, but refuses to send the papers to extradite him from Denmark to stand trial? Are they afraid he'll spill the beans on the whole sordid affair and be the final crack in our precious vaccine program and expose it for what it really is- a deadly cooperation between "the monolith of CDC-FDA-IOM-NIH and sub-agencies fused to the pharmaceutical industry, with no wall separating big pharma from former agency executives, such as the one-time director of the CDC, Dr. Julie Gerberding, who today works as president of Merck's Vaccine Division"?I join the author, James Grundvig, in asking exactly how high must the autism rate climb (1 in 10???) before we have a president and Congress who will finally dismantle this rotten to the core CDC? Let's demand they start by subpoenaing William Thompson, the whistle blower in the CDC, that has admitted to fraudently manipulating the data in yet another study to show no link between vaccines and autism. And then let's demand we finally have a study comparing fully vaxxed vs fully un-vaxxed.This book will make you cry but I hope it will also make you furious enough to demand "NO MORE!!!!"

Third generation nurse and we are still under the unwritten gag rule. So glad to see the Truth finally coming to the surface. This is an excellent read. I can only digest about 5 - 10 minutes at a time, still working on letting go of how health care is all about money.

I wanted to spend some time praising James Ottar Grundvig's wonderful new book, "Master Manipulator: The Explosive True Story of Fraud, Embezzlement, and Government Betrayal at the CDC" because I think it is something unique in the canon of autism literature. We have had the personal stories of families dealing with autism, and we have had some fine books dealing with various medical and scientific issues, but we haven't really had a book which examines at length the political culture in which this epidemic has been allowed to happen. Many of you are aware of Poul Thorsen, the Danish researcher who worked for the CDC and is now a federal fugitive for embezzling more than a million dollars to generate studies exonerating vaccines from causing autism. But what you don't know is how that happened behind the scenes at the CDC.The Thorsen depicted in this book is certainly an intelligent man, figuring out how to data-mine a rich vein of medical information in the Danish health registry. But there is also something else in Thorsen's personality, a need to ingratiate himself to powerful patrons, and give them what they want. It is not an uncommon failing, and may be something particularly American. Grundvig makes the argument that more than anything else, Thorsen wanted to make it big in America, and saw pleasing his superiors at the CDC as just the way to do it. And he also wanted to live large, buying a limited edition Harley, Audi Quattro, Honda SUV, as well as a half-million dollar home in a tony suburb of Atlanta. That money should have been spent doing honest autism research.Grundvig has a nice, easy to read style, and at a little more than 250 pages it is a quick read. I believe this is an important story which needs to be widely read in our community and beyond. I encourage people to read it, not to be depressed about how we have been betrayed, but to understand how fragile the facade is which keeps our children in their autism prisons. I'm reminded of what one teacher jokingly told me one day. She said, "You know, there's more than a thousand kids at this school, and only fifty of us. If they decided to stop listening to us, we'd be screwed."People should read this book to understand one simple fact: Our enemies aren't that strong. They have been flailing for years, trying to keep this story from breaking, and I don't think anybody is more surprised at their success than they are. They know that eventually they will lose. We just need to keep the pressure on. I also have to commend Grundvig for his easy-going, even humorous story-telling. He seems like the kind of guy you'd want to hang out with, have a beer, and swap some stories. If Thorsen represents the worst of America, Grundvig's honest reporting represents the best of American traditions.

GREAT BOOK- why we are still having this discussion is unbelievable to me. I have followed and studied this topic since 1999- my son was born in 2000. My wife and I forced our pediatrition to break up the MMR to three shots and administer over time. We also waited longer then the schedule recommended and declined quite a few vaccines- thankfully we have a healthy child. If I read this book first- I would have waited even longer and declined more. This book explains the corruption and current situation at the CDC and every parent, doctor, polititian should read it- now. Thank you Mr. Grundvig.

If you want to understand how the CDC could have gotten vaccine science so very wrong, this is the book for you. Grundvig gives us a detailed, blow-by-blow description of how Dr. Thorsen manipulated data, ingratiated himself with decision makers on both sides of the Atlantic and helped to corrupt the science on which the US's, and to great extent the world's, childhood vaccine program rests. I learned how other key figures in the CDC's vaccine program committed scientific fraud, and not just on vaccines, but on prior cover-ups like health problems from Agent Orange. This is THE book that explains how the CDC concocted its fraudulent evidence of a non-link between vaccines and autism.

If you are a new coffee fanatic, and are in to roasting your own coffee and wanting to learn all you can about coffee, go ahead and purchase this book, Pendergrast does a pretty good job of covering the coffee world from harvest to cup, and it is in an easy to read format. But I must say, I felt it was basically a "Cliff Note" of the all encompassing "Coffee Bible" that William H. Uker wrote almost a hundred years ago. Ukers book is titled "All About Coffee", and is the acknowledged complete work of every aspect of the coffee world. You can sometimes find the out of print book on Ebay, but it is usually over $150 for a worn out copy! I found that you can go to "Project Gutenberg" on the web and read the entire book, with all the full color hand drawn pictures, absolutely free of charge! Do it! You won't regret it!

I bought this book for my own information -- I've been a black coffee drinker for c. 60 years, and a real coffee aficionado for the past 15 years or so. The book's size and amount of information are almost overwhelming, and yet the author's clear, reader-friendly, nearly conversational writing style make it as much a "page-turner" as a good mystery novel. He covers the history, geography, economics, and complex sociology & politics of all aspects of this world-wide industry so completely as to make this work a textbook, nay, a one-volume college course. From Asia, Africa, and the Americas, to Starbuck's, Folgers, Maxwell House and everything in the U.S., it's all here. HIGHLY recommended!!

Probably the best historical book written about coffee as the author somehow made a factual compilation an easy read. The first half of the book was particularly entertaining. This book remains in my small library and I have used it as a reference several times. I have also purchased a few copies as gifts for friends.

Wow! This book really delves into behind the scene dealings of coffee companies extending into the darker aspects of government interventions in the exploitation of foreign nations' resources. Loaded with fun facts and pertinent information. I bought it for my dad for Christmas. He's a coffee lunatic and collects Chase & Sanborn vintage coffee tins.

It got more into the corporate battles than was my interest, but some folks may enjoy that. The history of coffee is a fascinating subject, for me.

I was wandering in Ethiopia when the curiosity about coffee was borned. I am a Brazilian but never looked deep into the story and history of coffee. This book is a piece of beauty as gives a tremendous parallel in between thes tory and the history of the world since coffee invention.

A well-written and informative book overall. Though I must echo the comments of other readers that state that it focuses more on the Americas. Having said that, it would have had to be a very long book to cover the world history of coffee. The book had some great parts which were very interesting (for example how America became addicted to drinking stale, packaged coffee in the 20th century) and parts that were less riveting (the incessant ups and downs of global coffee prices). Overall, I don't regret the purchase at all, it was a good read that left me with a much better understanding of coffee.

Good quality, good price, as expected!

Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom (Harvest in Translation)

From Publishers Weekly

Cultural theorist hooks means to challenge preconceptions, and it is a rare reader who will be able to walk away from her without considerable thought. Despite the frequent appearance of the dry word "pedagogy," this collection of essays about teaching is anything but dull or detached. hooks begins her meditations on class, gender and race in the classroom with the confession that she never wanted to teach. By combining personal narrative, essay, critical theory, dialogue and a fantasy interview with herself (the latter artificial construct being the least successful), hooks declares that education today is failing students by refusing to acknowledge their particular histories. Criticizing the teaching establishment for employing an over-factualized knowledge to deny and suppress diversity, hooks accuses colleagues of using "the classroom to enact rituals of control that were about domination and the unjust exercise of power." Far from a castigation of her field, however, Teaching to Transgress is full of hope and excitement for the possibility of education to liberate and include. She is a gentle, though firm, critic, as in the essay "Holding My Sister's Hand," which could well become a classic about the distrust between black and white feminists. While some will find her rejection of certain difficult theory narrow-minded, it is a small flaw in an inspired and thought-provoking collection. Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

"After reading Teaching to Transgress I am once again struck by bell hooks's never-ending, unquiet intellectual energy, an energy that makes her radical and loving." -- Paulo Freire "Passionately defines the Black feminist point of view that needs to be reflected upon in classroom discussions." -- Contemporary Education "Teaching to Transgress by bell hooks is a book that I not only love, but assign every semester to my Introduction to Women's Studies class. It is one of the best descriptions of the purpose and function of education and the educator that I've ever read. And students love it. So if you know any professors or students who aren't familiar with it, recommend it highly." -- Feminist Bookstore News "Teaching to Transgress is useful as a platform for a critique of current notions and practices of teaching and learning." -- Canadian Home Economics Journal

bell hooks is an amazing writer. Some of the chapters in this book will make you think, cry, pray, and work for a better tomorrow. While her focus is on the African-American community, one can apply what is learned from this book to any culture, minority, classroom, or group. An absolutely wonderful and easy read. You will not want to put this one down!

Every educator / progressive human needs a copy. A bible.

This has been one of my favorite and most influential books in my journey and education as a teacher. Her writing is beautiful and passionate and thoughtful. I committed the crime of highlighting entire paragraphs and chapters because almost every sentence is so vital and wise.

GREAT READ! Would definitely recommend to educators

A must-read for anyone working in education.

Her rendition of teaching to transgress is well thought out and clearly articulated. Bell Hooks has the audacity to propose an innovative yet ageless process which portrays a space where both teacher and student are given liberty to teach and learn together without apology!

When I discovered bell hooks' love for Paulo Friere, I started reading her work. Recommended! There is a gentleness and a love in her words, though they are difficult sometimes to take internally. Read bell hooks.

I hadn't read Animal Farm before and thought it was time. The book is short and to the point. The story makes it easy to understand the overall point Orwell was trying to make. I definitely recommend!

Great book, but my copy is almost unreadable. Anywhere in the book where the letters "iv" are together, i.e. live, given, etc. the word is broken up with "Chapter IV" in the middle. As in gChapter IVen. Or how about prChapter IVately. Very disappointed that this would be put out. Add paragraph breaks mid-sentence and you now have a literary nightmare.Just noticed this date on the last page. This the date I ordered it. No publisher. Almost seems bootleg-ish....I want my money back.

My review is not of the book Animal Farm but of this edition. In case you are looking for a review of the book itself, I highly recommend it. It is a wonderful book and strangely relevant today.I bought this paperback edition from Amazon a few days ago. When it arrived, it looked like someone had printed it on a desktop printer and stapled it together. That on its own wouldn't be a major issue. The deal killer and the reason for the one star review is that someone appears to have run a find and replace on the letter pair "IV" replacing it with the words "Chapter IV". So, for instance, the word "perspective" reads "perspectChapter IVe" and the word "receive" reads "receChapter IVe". The entire book has been affected by this. Glancing through the book, I realized how often the letter pair IV appears in English. Nearly every page in the book has at least one word affected by this. When I first received a copy, I assumed it was that specific copy and ordered another one with a different cover. I didn't check the manufacturer. Turns out it is the same book with a different cover and the issue was in it again. If you are looking to buy an edition of the book, buy some other manufacturer's copy unless you'd like to decipher words with random "Chapter IV" in the middle just for fun.

I am reviewing Amazon's "paperback" edition - not the novel itself (which is wonderful.) This edition was literally printed to fill my order - the date printed on the final page is 3 days before I received it in the mail. The type is tiny, there are weird blank lines throughout, and the words "Chapter IV" just appear randomly many, many times. It's unreadable. What on earth is Amazon playing at by selling this garbage product?I now know that reviews of a "book" on Amazon are not necessarily reviews of the product you are buying. I assumed this edition would be fine since it had over 4 stars. But I now see the average stars include all kinds of editions including Kindle.

The book itself is great - no issues with the book. This kindle version, however, is a travesty. There is not a single paragraph without a glaring typo. It's as if they just scanned the pages of a print version, let the OCR run wild, and did zero proofreading afterwards. Examples include "expect" instead of "except," "to" instead of "too," missing words, punctuation in the wrong place, etc. It's so distracting, that I had stop reading at the beginning of chapter 7, and get a different version. Do yourself a favor and skip this version.

In the 21st century, when we believe that everything is evolving around us and that all countries are moving forward, we realize that there is still a parasite which it is difficult to get rid of.Countries that had the opportunity to evolve, have had to pass a difficult test of not falling into totalitarianism and ambition. Such was the case of some countries of the Soviet Union that achieved liberation, but still others continue to fall into the same abyss from which they can't rise, or don't want to, since that parasite has crawled in the mind of their crowd, as did happen in North Korea, China, etc.Animal Farm shows the perfect example of how the unhealthy idea of a cheap Socialism began to take root to become a dictatorial Communism, as it happens in Venezuela today. Its strange end leaves a bitter taste that perhaps the writer did on purpose to open the consciousness of future generations. An open ending that forces the reader to ask himself: what is the solution? And how will it end?Through human experiences of the animals of this farm, we can identify this truth that still lingers in some shady societies of the present. The solution is in our hands. It will depend on the degree of preparation, culture, moral values, determination, and courage people have to free their homeland and achieve a better future. Remember governments must fear the people and not the opposite. After that, I summarize my point of view about the strongest references dealt with through the characters in this book (that can be easily identify and distinguished when you start to read the story) in the following sections:1) Leaders full of charisma who manage to enter the hearts of the crowd by their power of conviction. They choose the most insecure sectors and people to whom they inject large doses of false trust and dependence, and then use them in the propagation of their miserable revolution.2) From the beginning, they call a supposed self-identification and self-recognition through rhythmic and flattering slogans. They remember again and again their few and poor achievements that remain in the distant past. Then, they impose a barrier of differences between them and the supposed enemy. In this way, the people is infused with a nationalism that is based on ignorance, fear, and blind reverence, forcing them to repeat proverbs and apply reforms without understanding the true meaning or purpose, thus beginning to resemble a herd of sheep, marching pleased towards the slaughterhouse.3) They make the crowd believe that they have the final decision and, for the common good, unconsciously follow the rules and imposed parameters. In addition, some extra benefits are allowed to those who follow and protect the regime indulgently. This is how they teach the majority that it is better to be corrupt, dishonest, and negligent, in order to achieve higher ranks.4) The regime feel entitled to legalize and abolish what suits it, ordering the people what to eat, how to dress, greet and live, and what to learn, while they live freely at the expense of the efforts of others and of the injustices committed, trampling the honor of an entire country and their own Machiavellian socialist laws.5) What seemed a worthy plan for community, social, intellectual, and economic development, now shows the true intention that tries to kill the spirit of solidarity to impose the dictatorial and even genocidal plan, if the regressive revolution warrants it.6) Everyone, even the majority of the crowd, realize that revolutionary projects are a total failure when they find themselves amidst of aberrant poverty.7) When they want to discredit an opponent or other progressive ideas, they use their famous method of defamation with lies, intimidation, and any other means. For them, the aim (maintain / save the revolution) justifies the means (spreading false rumors, prosecutions, torture, hunger, espionage), importing in the least the opinion of others, since their own people live in ignorance, cowardice and/or conformism.8) To finally protect their interests and ideals, communists surround themselves with and associate with allies of their own class: corrupt, traffickers, murderers and terrorists, and expand their power further through the destruction of every vital block of a society , from its financial structure to public sectors, such as health, without caring about the misery that people live. To rule the ignorant and negligent is much easier.9) There comes a time when the revolutionary-communist doctrine is so deeply rooted in the consciences, that the people forget how well they lived before. The most outrageous thing is that there are still people who support such regimes and whose can mental programming is so easily influenced on behalf the sadistic needs and convenience of these cunning and malevolent rulers.Times before the Rebellion are being left in the past, where the memories struggle to keep them safe to share them with others

Do not order the paperback version pictured here. The font is so small it is unreadable, but that is the least of the troubles of this book. There is no copyright information or title page, there are paragraph breaks in the middle of sentences and every single time the letters "iv" appear in a word it is replaced with "Chapter IV". I have added a few photos so you can avoid the same issue I had.

The Zookeeper’s Wife, a true story set in Warsaw, Poland at the onset of WWII, is both horrifying and endearing on a scale I’ve not experienced in years. Antonina lives with her husband and small son in a villa on the zoo grounds. They are extremely knowledgeable about the animals in their care; each one with their individual quirks, and all loved like family. The zoo is well ahead of its time in providing natural habitats for its residents. Laid out like a lush garden, it’s a world famous showplace, a haven for both people and animals. Then the Nazis come with their tanks and bombs and total disregard for life. Drunken Gestapo agents shoot animals in their cages for sport. A pig the son is caring for is snatched away and butchered. But somehow the family manages, by one clever ploy after another, to remain at the villa where they daringly rescue Jews and work in the resistance. Yet through all the fear and deprivation, the spirit triumphs.Yes, at times Ackerman indulges in excessive scene-setting, eulogizing linden trees, for instance. Or she'll go off on a pages-long explanatory tangent - which, despite my impatient nature, nearly always proved fascinating. But all-in-all, I'd have to rank The Zookeeper's Wife right up there with Leon Uris' Mila 18 for a story that will haunt you forever.

I wanted to like this book. The premise is great and I like that the author tried to incorporate actual quotes from diaries and other historical sources into the story. Unfortunately, this is a case of an author who desperately needed a more assertive editor. There were very long and boring tangents that lost my attention. I put this book down/away multiple times and even considered not finishing it, but then forced myself to finish it because I was reading it for my book club. The thing that I despised most about the book was the changing voice in the writing. Sometimes it was told in first person and then it would suddenly shift to third person. In other words, it would say, "So and so did such and such", and then, "She probably felt X based on this passage" (that would then include a quote from her diary). I would have been OK with either writing style, but the constant switching back and forth was irritating.

I have a big interest in WWII history. I was really looking forward to reading this book, especially with all the great reviews I had heard about it. It was selected for my book club, and all of us felt the author was WAY too wordy/descriptive about the most mundane things. For example, there was a whole page listing every type of beetle a man had collected. On top of that, the book seemed very choppy and sometimes hard to follow, it jumped around a lot.

Reading this book I eventually began to wonder if it was in fact a novel or rather an awkward attempt at yet another history of the much documented and infamous Warsaw Ghetto of World War 2. It frequently bogs down in plodding, excruciatingly boring sidebars and tedious enumerations of names and other details that do nothing to advance whatever the plot is supposed to be. I always try to finish any book I start, but in this case I completely lost interest a little short of halfway and gave it up as a pointless waste of time.

This is such a good book I could not put it down. Such a clever idea to tell the story of the zoo and the Warsaw experience under Nazi rule. I look forward to the movie as I want to see how th e y made a movie from this book. Jack Kushner

I was waiting to see the movie before I wrote my review.....This book was amazing.......I learned so much about what Warsaw Poland had to deal with during WW2......it is unbelievable how they accomplished all they did and how many were saved because of this underground network....and this family's willingness to help....they must have all been terrorized fearing what could happen if they were caught....the people and their helpers were an amazing group of people.....I kept trying to picture our (US) having to go through something like this......it's horrifying.....the parts about the actual zoo and the animals and the ones they kept in their homes....was a nice touch to add some pleasure among so much heartache........and what they did to those poor animals.....well, between the people and the animals......I cried many times....I had to shut the book sometimes.....because I was so sad....It is on my list as one of my favorite books I have read.....now to the movie.....I think it is always better to read the book first......you learn so much...that being said.....no movie has ever been as good as the book....because they just couldn't make a two hour movie and get everything in the movie.....the movie, however, was very disappointing......I think they could have done a much better job....if you don't want to be disappointed, I'd read the book and forget about the movie....the book is amazing and so well written.....if you only see the movie, you will be missing out on the entire experience that the book avails you.....you will not really have learned anything about this chapter in WW2.....

One of THE trumpet books

This is my husband’s book. He uses it quite a bit.

Exercises in this book should be part of your daily warm up. This is quite simply the best book for slurs, octave exercises and lip building activities with many other added components.

I haven't played trumpet in over 10 years. This was a WORKOUT!! This book came highly recommended by three friends who are current high school band directors and one retired director. They weren't kidding. This book requires discipline, but it will absolutely improve your play!

Arguably the best method for symphonic trumpet.

Great book. Right up there with Clarke. Probably a bit more difficult than Clarke.

I had an old edition, circa 1960's; don't know what happened to it. When I started playing again in 2012, after a 26-year "layoff", I went looking for this book. That I couldn't find it led to the subsequent purchase of a new copy. Truth be told, I hate the exercises, but they do the intended job, so I'll keep using the book and continue to practice like I know I should. Swallow your pride, unwrinkle your nose; and buy it.

Perfect! Really Great Product!

Very clear and understandable

It is advertised for 2 book set, but I only received 1 book part A. However, after contact the seller, i get half of the cost refund.

A Perl novice picking this book up will be impressed. It's big, the prose is good, and it seems to have a command of the subject. This is all misleading. The book was written by professional authors who pick up a language as they write a book. Perl isn't like other langauges - the mindset and featureset are completely different. Writing effective Perl means getting a grasp on ideas taken from awk, sed, Lisp, C++, sh, and a dozen other places. This book teaches Perl as if it were another C dielect with a funny syntax. This certainly makes it easy to "leaern Perl", but after reading over 800 pages, you'll actually learn very little Perl. And no wonder - large amounts of this book were cut and paste verbatum from other books Dietel wrote about C++ and Visual Basic! Nothing unique to Perl is discussed, such as Perl's excellent date manipulation fascilities, object serialization, or indeed any module beyond the CGI module (on which a thousand books have been written).Descriptions of features are vague and half hearted showing lack of a clear understanding. To someone who knows Perl, this book sounds like a homework assignment where someone read about Perl and then wrote about their findings, uncertainties and all.Throughout the book, code listings basically work (I worked hard on that as a paid technical reviewer - my name is in the credits - and this was no small task) but they too completely miss the style, spirit, and indeed the point of programming Perl. They're riddled with security holes. They don't leverage modules, and Perl's CPAN repository is probably it's greatest strength.I don't like writing bad reviews. I don't like having failed to have persuaded the authors to address security. I wanted to like this book since it was the first I've worked on. With lots of help from people who truly grasp Perl this book could have been medicore but Dietel's production-line like business model doesn't allow for this. Books need to be written by experts or at least senior members of the community. Rank novices cannot just read other books and repeat back their findings and call it a book. Or perhaps you honestly believe that Dietel has mastered every language on the sun and had plenty of time left over to write an 800 page book about the language they learned last month. As with any bad review, you should be asking what motivated the bad review. Often it's a frustrated novice. Sometimes it's pure snobbery. Other times it's religion or a burnt employee. I'm not a Perl novice; I've been programming for 21 years now and I've been programming in Perl quite heavily for about 6 of those. I'm a bit of a Perl snob but only because there are so many really excellent books like Programming Perl, Learning Perl, Beginning Perl, CGI Programming with Perl, and scores of others. Dietel treated me very well and paid me fairly (again, I wish I could give an average review). I'm just writing this review to temper the initial impressions of those first learning Perl with a slightly more educated assessment. If you want one massive book with loads and loads of Perl knowledge, Computer Science & Perl Programming was collectively written by about 20 of the best known Perl hackers who have developed the most important modules, worked on the core, and spoke and written more often than anyone else. And while CS&PP has nearly the same page count, it costs half as much. Besides being more thorough, more insightful, more interesting, and in better style, it's a heck of a lot of fun.In short, Perl: How to Program is just another in-it-for-the-money amaturely written Perl+CGI book with a lot of padding and little insight.

Make no mistake, you are buying more than a book; this is a university COURSE in programming Perl. First, the peeves...Start with its price--$$$--grrr! No solutions are to be had for the exercises??? The CD is really mickey-mouse. Think about it...this book is written by "Educators" on "computer programming" and the CD is little more than 1st generation "acceptable"?! If anyone could and should do better...?Right. Now the good points. Super organized...logically arranged, easy to find info as a reference. Each chapter tells you what you will learn, provides terminology to learn, and the obligatory quizzes at the end of the chapter reinforces what you just covered...all the pros of a good university text! The page layout--font, colors, etc., are all utilized with great effectiveness. The language of the text is closer to a 2nd or 3rd year text. You are definitely not talked down to. I found the language to be in the upper level of my comfort zone. I had to slow down and think. What makes it acceptable as an introductory text is that the authors are very precise and clear with their terminology/definitions. It's all there in black and white but if you didn't catch definition A the way THEY defined it, definition B will bring you back. It can be rather slow moving at times, albeit complete. To be sure, more information couldn't be supplied in a text this size without a shoehorn. It is as complete and thorough as anyone could hope. The teaching method is to show a morsel of programming which you then learn by dissecting for understanding. The code works. It all works. Unfortunately you aren't given much opportunity to implement what you have learned outside of playing with the illustrated code (since the exercises have no solutions). I only studied up to chapter 15/23 (databases) and picked what I needed from the rest. [I needed to rewrite a program from Perl to another language]This book is definitely NOT FOR EVERYONE! The bottom line you must accept is that you STUDY it! If you just want to get aquainted with Perl code--perhaps be able to read and understand it, do yourself a favor, try another book--there are scads of em out there. There is nothing casual about this book but if you are willing to put in the time, it will reward you. I believe this book will become a reference book for me as well, without having to buy another. The authors have written other "programming language" books with the same Formula--I'm currently waiting for the PYTHON release. I only hope it lives up to this one.Overall an impressive text, but only for the SERIOUS student!

I am a computer system and network engineer for more than six years in Japan. I should state that I am not an experienced programmer in Perl or any other programming languages but I have some basic and limited knowledge in VB and Java. I have studied many computer text books but frankly saying the Perl How to Program book, is an excellent textbook as well as a handy reference book among the best books that I have studied so far. Not only it is well written but also the structure of the book is sorted and categorized in way that even non-native English spoken individuals can easily get the required understanding of programming language without trapping in ambiguous words and phrases. I have also bought the Learning Perl (Llama) but the Llama textbook is not a good textbook for the beginners who are eager to learn programming language from scratch, and the structure of the Llama for instance; the examples and the explanation of important subjects are insufficient, in addition there are some words and phrases which have been used in the Llama's main texts that I looked up in many English dictionaries and vocabulary sources but I have not found any description for them, the words such as "hoozistatic" and "fizzbin". Therefore I recommend the Perl How to Program to anyone who is eager to learn Perl programming language as well as the techniques of programming of any other programming languages from scratch!
