Review

I know a lot about boys with ADHD. I have worked with hundreds of them, we raised one, and I was one. I found Raising Boys With ADHD to be filled with insights, information and information that would be extraordinarily useful for parents who are facing the daunting--but rewarding--job of guiding a child with ADHD through the shoals of boyhood. The book offers practical advice and up-to-date information on this puzzling disorder. Beyond merely defining the problems, the authors provide solutions and strategies. This book will go a long way in enhancing your knowledge and parenting techniques. Read this book. Keep it close by. Refer to it. Reread it. Its contents will help you to better understand the needs of your "unhappy wanderer." --Richard D. Lavoie, The Motivation BreakthroughRaising Boys with ADHD is a reasoned and reasonable, practical and inspirational guide for parents focused on preparing boys with ADHD to transition successfully into a happy, functional and emotionally healthy adult life. Forgan and Richey are experienced clinicians, deftly blending their knowledge of science and experience to create a practical, readable and useful guide for parents of boys with ADHD. This volume will be on my short list of books I recommend to parents of children with ADHD. --Dr. Sam Goldstein, Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Attention DisordersThe book is informational and action-oriented: terms are explained, and current research and treatment options are explored in language that parents can understand, use with their sons, and disseminate to others. --Publishers Weekly, March 19, 2012

I think I've only ever written one other review, but I had to write one for this book. I am still in the process of reading it, but in only the first few chapters, I have learned A TON about what we have experienced with our ten year old, and now I understand so many things so much better for our older son. I SURE WISH I had understood these things a few years back as our older son had some things he struggled with in school, but he did not know how to adequately communicate, and we did not know what to look for, or which questions to ask him. ADHD is a real thing-my husband and I are not into quick-fixes, but this book is not about that. THIS BOOK IS ABOUT ADVOCATING FOR YOUR CHILD (son or daughter) IN A COMPLETE, BALANCED AND HOLISTIC WAY! They have done the hard work of interviewing doctors for you, so you can read their Q & A 's right here. ITS SO WORTH the time and money to get this book!

Good book for a thorough but simple overview of ADHD. Provides good suggestions and is easy to follow. Some sections left me with a "and then what?" Feeling but overall this was a good read. I would say it is best if your child is in early elementary school. Although the kid on the front is clearly older, it seems like the content was more focused on younger kids. There is a chapter or two focusing on high school age issues though.

This topic is so dear to my heart because my son struggles each day with ADHD. The funny thing is, his struggles (and they are too numberous to count) are made better when I am educated, involved and actively advocating for my son. This book is filled with a lot of information about ADHD and it is a book that does what it should-reminds moms and dads and grandparents and caregivers of children with A.D.D. that they are NOT doing it wrong, but they might be able to do it better;) EVERY family should own this book, read it, reread it and use the strategies as they are applicable to your child/children. You might just cry with relief knowing that you are not alone and that there are a lot of struggling parents, heartbroken for their children as they watch them struggle socially, academically, behaviorally and internally."Love your son exactly as he is... His self-esteem depends on knowing he is precious to you, not a bother, despite the wild ride his ADHD sometimes puts you through." - Forgen,J and Richey,M, Raising Boys with ADHD

My son has ADHD and bought this book to see if there was any new insight. After years of treatment, research, doctors, therapies, 504 plans, educators, and just day to day, I can say that this book is a good introduction for those who are facing a diagnosis and tips to help you get on your way. They offer sound advice that is easy to follow and not overwhelming. They use evidence based research and do not assert any ideas that are experimental and tout them as tried and true.If you need to learn about ADHD, what it means, and what to do, this is a great book to start with.

I got this book out of desperation, looking for ways to handle my 6 year old who has ADHD. I think it's a good book for parents who want to learn the basics or brush up on the subject, but I didn't find that I learned very many new things from it.

As other reviewers have stated, the authors are parents and Psychologists, and this is they simply and with first-hand knowledge explain ADHD itself and the multiple options used to "treat" it. My struggle was with medication, like most parents. They explain most of the medications mentioned by the Pediatrician and their side effects as well as the results they've witnessed with some of these medications. They are also very candid to tell parents that there are risks to Not medicating a child who is struggling to focus in all of life's parts. My struggle was also with whether my son was just "being a boy", immature, inattentive (ADHD), or if it was my parenting causing his behavior. They deal with all of this as you read through the book. Its a very easy ready, too. Not cumbersome and wordy like many books. You will be glad you bought it if you have questions like I did.

My son was recently diagnosed with ADHD. I went out and bought various books to understand what this meant for him. This book in particular I thought was fantastic. It is easy to understand and well written. It covers a variety of related topics. When I finished reading it felt like I had a solid understanding and it wasn't a bore to get through. I would HIGHLY recommend this book!

We were confused, worried, and needed guidance when our 7-year-old was diagnosed with ADHD and ODD but this book has given us lots of valuable information. We feel that we're now pointed in the right direction to make a plan of success for our son. Thankful for resources like this!
