Great introductory guide to all aspects of having backyard chickens. We are hopefully going to be getting some in our backyard very soon. I plan on using the information I learned here to create our own chicken oasis. Granted some of the information is available on the web and in magazines but here it is in an easily digestible form. I was very interested in the topic and the way in which it was presented. This is an excellent book for raising a few chickens in a small backyard. It covers all the basics and is very thorough, even with ideas to deal with city ordinances.There are many online resources included for further study. I would recommend this to anyone who hoped to learn how to start having fresh eggs each day.

As a child I recall having several chickens bought froma chicken farm. My family and I bought several baby chicks and allowed them to roam freely in our big field/yard behind our bungalow. We bought chicks twice, they were a fond part of my childhood memories. The book was like a trip down memory lane for me. I recall wildly chasing the chicks and the mama hen would try to protect her young. She would also lay an egg every morning. However things did not go well as stray cats had my backyard chickens for dinner on multiple occasions.I realized that as a child I made many mistakes in rearing and harvesting the eggs from my chickens. It was indeed very helpful and perhaps has spurred me into rearing chickens again. Now to find a backyard.. Great book for sustaining chickens. The best eggs are the ones which are freshly hatched

This was fantastic. Had everything I needed to know and more. I feel so much more confident knowing all the different types of breeds of chickens and which ones are the best egg layers, what the best type of food is for the chickens, how to set up the brooder light effectively, and how to deal with common mistakes and even deal with pests.So well organized and I'll definitely be referencing the book again.

This book is written like a 10th grade research paper. It has black and white grainy pictures. I honestly did not even finish reading it, it was so painful to read. I felt like it was not giving me any useful information from someone who actually raises chickens, but rather information from someone who read about raising chickens once. I plan to send this book back!

I would have given this book four stars if it had contained photos. The overall information is good - - written for people who have never raised chickens before. But it would have been tremendously helpful had there been photos included, especially when describing the different breeds and egg variations.

This book is a great guide for raising chickens. It provides pictures with explanations about everything. Which breed should I choose? How many to purchase and what gender? What should I feed them? How could I protect them from pests, predators… etc. The author shows in a very interesting way how to take care of your chickens from a to z. Many thanks to the author.

Very easy read. If you are unsure if you would like to keep chickens in your yard, you can finish this book in 2-3 sittings and have a very good idea of what you might get yourself into. 4 stars because I think there are a great many details that are left out, however for someone completely new to raising chickens it seems like an excellent way to start learning.

Am a passionate breeder of Indigenous chicken not the exotic type. and am anticipating getting more breeds from Mexico and Texas to boost my farm, this book is also helping ion knowing the breeds, ways of raring the chicken from the backyard but importantly am very keen on the prevention and control pests and diseases

This book, which is both humorous and on point, is perhaps the best book that I've read about writing. Prose refuses to set down any hard and fast rules, knowing that the best stories flout them, but continues to offer her advice in a piecemeal, by example sort of way. Her list of books at the end of Reading Like a Writer, and her insistence on reading and doing so carefully, helps us remember why we want to write in the first place. Rarely have I read through a book like this so quickly, or am I so eager to do so again.

This isn't the most exciting or compelling book, but it is less dry than Bloom. And it does have moments of great beauty.You can break Prose's book is really two books: in one part, she teaches people how to read a book in such a way as to enjoy the pleasure of the language; in the second part, she teaches writers how to improve their writing-to make every word earn its place.In the first part,Prose teaches you how to break down a piece of fiction to the smallest pieces and then appreciate how those pieces are built up into a large, wonderful structure: the novel. Once you appreciate that, and can read with an eye that appreciates that beauty, taking your time, and savoring the author's ability.In the second part, Prose confronts a lot of "rules" about writing, knocking them down with powerful examples. What you are left with is probably Prose's chief rule: it's about finding an original voice. If a writer can focus on interesting word choice, groundbreaking detail, and contrarian paths, they can surprise readers in a wonderful way. Finally, she concludes with a list of 100 books that should be read immediately.This book probably appeals to a small group of writers and word nerds. If you fall within that group, you can probably put this book to use, even if it is a bit dry.

I am becoming more thrifty about book purchases and how many pairs of shoes I own, and more aware of how much pie I eat and going outside in any weather conditions. Francine Prose's book taught me new things, reminded me of things I knew but had forgotten, and also reinforced my best writing habits as I work on my novel-in-progress, THREAD. I am jealous that her last name is Prose! A little joke. This book allows readers and writers to understand their romance with words and stories, observation and creation. I checked it out at my local library, but I had to have it as a constant companion in my house--the way I keep good tea, favorite photos and friends nearby.

I loved the novel Household Saints and the movie. I was delighted to read this book and for 271 pages I became a critical and analytical student of literature. Ms. Prose used examples of the great literary master such as Tolstoy, Chekov and Maupassant and contemporary writers such as Denis Johnson. Ms. Prose is an astute professor of writing and she spoke of her Utah class and the von Kleist novel The Marquise of O___. It was thrilling to have her explain the students reaction to a classic masterspiece. This book will transport the reader writer to a deeper understanding of the dynamics and structures of fiction and literature.I highly recommend!Julie E.

I found this book to be incredibly helpful. Ms. Prose is clear and accessible, using excellent examples of quality writing and breaking it down into its mechanical parts, without sacrificing the love of the voice of the work. I appreciated the way each chapter was dedicated to a different segment of quality writing. I also appreciated her comparisons to Chekov in the end, showing that even all the principles of good writing she had thus far shared could be chucked in under the right circumstances. A worthy read for anyone interested in becoming a better reader or writer.

I am a firm believer that a writer is not a writer unless they are a reader first and foremost. This book reiterates this very important premise. It is not written from the standpoint of an intellectual talking down to writers who are having a hard time understanding why their work isn't what they would even enjoy reading themselves. Instead, the author is sharing what seems to be a long lost secret hidden beneath heavy loads of misconceptions brought on by our daily lives, our responsibility to others, and our giving in to the shine of technology. She reminds us writers that we use to love reading and that reading is why we became writers in the first place.

If Amazon would let you rate things 4.5 stars, I would rate this 4.5 stars.I was already in the middle of two other books when I started this one. This is the book I kept me wanting to go back and read it to the end. It also made me want to read and reread a bunch of classics. A very pleasant authorial voice and interesting little tidbits on every page. I think it will help my writing a little bit, but mostly you should read this book just for the pleasure of reading this book.Francine Prose wrote about writing so that we can read about reading.

It's the book you wish you'd had for all the rhetoric/comp/writing courses you took in college.Ms. Prose beautifully explains how form is arrived at in writing, starting with word choices, building sentences, constructing paragraphs and chapters - all the formal ingredients of fiction.She explains how character is presented, showing just how much to tell or expose.She gives a crystal-clear explanation, with good examples, of point of view and how it's managed and controlled.The book is written with plenty of humor and humility (there are lots of instances where she laid down a hard-and-fast rule, only to be proved wrong by a student's successful attempt to break the rule). The book comes out of her classroom experience at writers' workshops, and her great success as a published author.There's a good-sized appendix with suggestions of books "to be read immediately."A worthwhile and important book, and fun to read.

I must admit, I had preconceived expectations about Paul's first book. I thought this would be just another celebrity book, boasting about their fabulous life and offering us mere mortals a few typical pointers on how to be stylish. I was so wrong! Paul offers down to earth advice on how to optimize what you already have - not only in your closet but also inside yourSELF - to live your best life! Yes, he gives us solid advice on how to look great but what I found most surprising was his compassionate approach to motivating us to lead a confident, healthy and happy life. He really speaks to EVERY woman and I found myself devouring the book in one sitting. This is a book I'll come back to time and time again and it also makes a fantastic gift. Bravo Paul!

I thought it was great that the author decided to write the book while at his Grey Gardens estate. What a pleasant surprise to see in the book what Grey Gardens looks like now. I got the book for that purpose but when I started reading it, I loved the tips. Plus it felt like Paul Wharton’s personality really came through. I’ve only had my book for 2 days but I already love jumping around from chapter to chapter, gathering good information and enjoying the beautiful, bright and glossy images. Very impressive and fun.

A very good read; not too long, very positive hints and advice. Anyone in need of solid down-to-earth advice on style and beauty should definitely make this book their first stop. Highly recommended.

Anyone who sees Paul Wharton on tv, listens to his podcast or attends an event he Emcees is asking the same question: What’s the secret to his fabulousness?!? In his book, he answers that and more. I loved the personal stories he uses as a foundation for his beauty and brand advice; as you’re reading, you really feel like you’re having a chat with your bestie! So while it’s a fun and fast read, it’s even more practical. I bought several copies to share Paul’s generosity with others!

This book was just a joy to read! The stunning photographs make the book feel like a work of art. Moreover, the author’s knack for combining good story telling with much-needed tips for life make this book a must read for everyone.

This book was everything I needed to get things back on track. After reading the first couple of chapters I ran to my closet to reorganize and take down pieces of clothing that just were not relevant to my wearing. Paul talks about all the do’s, dont’s, and simplicity of fashion that you can relate to on every level.

This book should definitely be a staple for every woman. There were so many tips. I look forward to Paul’s next book. Please don’t miss out on “Pulling It All Together” ❤️.

I'm a teacher who works with high school girls who have learning disabilities and I'm always on the lookout for books that have high content and low vocabulary for students who have reading issues. One of my students must write a report on the subject of this book and is having a very difficult time with the books on her grade level that are in the school library. I'm helping her with all her notes by interpreting the vocabulary in the books she has taken out. I wanted her to be able to use the skills she's learning from me without having to deal with unfamiliar vocabulary in at least one book so that she could say that she did the notes for that source by herself and have a sense of accomplishment, so I purchased this book for her use, and it's perfect. The content is high, but she doesn't need the vocabulary constantly explained to her. She's delighted that she can do this on her own, without my help, just as I suspected would happen. I recommend this book for students who are younger as well, i.e. age 8 and up, as well as for students with intellectual disabilities and comprehension disabilities. For what it's worth, I'm a doctoral candidate in the field of special education and also hold degrees in psychology, speech pathology and audiology, and education, so I hope this will help to hold the recommendation seriously.

My daughter needed a book for a report she had to do in class. My daughter was in 5th grade so reports are new for her and this book was easy for her follow and allowed her to get some good information to put into her report.
