More a history of writing and of book production. Also some interesting observations and incidents in the lives of some of the author’s favorite writers. Since the writer of this book is quite widely read, many of the works discussed are rather refined or even obscure. Religious writers seem to me to be disproportionately represented. But quite engaging throughout, like being in the company of a very well-read friend.

"A History of Reading" is an eclectic collection of essays on books, bibliophiles, bibliophobes, bibliokleptomanes, printing, translation, censorship, reading glasses and the Heian period in Japan. A browser's delight, it can also be devoured in a single sitting (guilty). From reading aloud to reading silently and from the physical pleasures of a book's shape, binding and smell to the less corporeal qualities of books that prompted Pinochet's Chile to ban "Don Quixote" as subversive, Alberto Manguel's bibiomanic panorama is a thoroughly enjoyable celebration of one of life's greatest pleasures. In it, the reader will encounter Callimachus of Cyrene, who worked in the "vanished library" of Alexandria and laid the foundations for what we know today as the library catalogue; compare and contrast the difffering approaches to public readings of Charles Dickens and Pliny the Younger; and decide once and for all whether it is preferable to read lying down or at a desk. Tolle, lege!

One of my all time favorite books. I have worn through the paperback copy so am treating myself to hardcover. Great outline of the history of reading through interesting narratives and anecdotes.

The thought I had while reading this book is that, I wish that I had read back when I was an undergraduate which was well before it was published! This writer has a wonderful vision of the art of Communication and constantly had me remembering lots of pieces of my own life! On the other hand it showed me that missed out on most of the possibilities in this life.

The title (A History of Reading) is admittedly dull. However, this is one off my all-time top five favorite books.

The interesting, incidental trivia of literacy is presented in a most intriguing manner. This was far more interesting than I initially expected, and definitely worth reading.

Fascinating read. I used it in a class titled The Writer and Artist, the Artist as Writer. The essays stimulated wonderful discussions about books and reading. Very accessible writer. He's clearly a lover of books, reading and history.

It is wonderful to read about a subject that you value so much written by someone who feels the same way. The value for me, however, was the prism Manguel offers through which reading is separated into a variety of dazzling colors. I enjoyed the history, the anecdotes, his personal experiences, and his ability to carry a thread from our earliest ancestors desire to understand the written word to the present. His references caused me to visit the library and bookstores once again and enjoy authors that I had either forgotten or with whom I was not yet familiar. It is a book I will recommend frequently to anyone I know who loves reading.

There are no words to describe the joy you will feel when you receive this book. There are many, many "hidden treasures" within .. including replicates of programs, copies of lyrics scrawled in Marley's own handwriting, photos of him over the years, pull-out posters, replicates of tickets to his shows, and more. While you're looking at the book, you'll come across pockets that hold these items, and it's more than you can imagine. You feel like he's there looking at the book with you!

A thorough overview of the man an his legacy through narrative and pictures. Am excellent gift for the inquisitive millinneal to the seasoned reggae enthusiast wanting to know or be reminded of the Man...Bob Marley and the power of his music vibrating throughout the world even beyond his transition . A great read, informative and enjoyable all at the same time.

Purchased as a gift for my 19 yr old daughter (I'm not a Marley fan but she lives for the guy). According to her, she loves it. I looked through it because I was curious and to be honest, I thought it was a pretty cool book. Seemed like a good bio about his roots, and the added touch of memorabilia throughout was a nice touch. Something different and kept your interest. If it keeps MY interest when I'm not really into the subject, then for those that ARE into him, you'll probably dig it.

The book was for someone who loves Bob Marley, it was a gift he really loved it, thought it had a lot of imformation in it that he didn't no

This is a truly amazing book with gorgeous photos and pull-out replicas of Bob Marley & the Wailers memorabilia. Much more than I expected!!

This is a great read, perhaps less speckled with Hiaasen's brilliant humor than his other works, but with a far more poignant message. To say more would give away the story. Having read all his novels at least twice, I think this one may contain the most important statement. Very highly recommended.

Whenever I can download a Carl Hiaasen novel for $1.99 I do so. This novel was a little more flippant than most of his other novels I have read, meaning that the murders were kind of casually no big deal, all in the good cause of trying to save the paradise of Miami from tourists taking over. For example, although a detective/police trying to run down the criminals story, it was laugh out loud funny in parts. I like the way the author ends his novels and this is no exception. I can’t help myself. I enjoy reading his novels.

I didn’t want to like this book much. I was of the opinion Carl Hiaasen is an over-rated writer. In a book or two of his I’d read previously, I thought he had a macabre sense of humor he used to justify his glee in violence. His imagination when crafting these scenes was too fertile for me. But in this book, his villain makes such a fine case, I have to sigh admiringly. As one of the army of winter residents of South Florda, I felt pangs. I’m kind of an old hippy in some ways, so the rape of our environment world-wide is of deep concern to me. To see my own part in abusing our beautiful natural world cut pretty deep. This book contains actual data that should be required reading for all “Snow Birds.”

On the plus side, Tourist Season had the usual Hiaasen over-the-top wit.On the down side, it was a bit too dark for my tastes. It may not have come off the same way in the 80's when it was written, but terrorism played for laughs just does not work in this day and age.We are used to the bad guys getting their comeuppance in horrible, outrageous ways from Haiaasen, but in this case so do a lot of victims whose only crimes are vacationing or retiring in Florida. I found that off-putting, especially since Hiaasen obviously has a lot of sympathy for these particular bad guys, who are killing random people in hopes of driving people away from Florida in order to ebb the development that is hurting the environment. Not an altogether bad read. Funny at times. Uncomfortable at times. There are many other better options from Hiaasen.

Carl Hiaasen's books tend to follow a formula. That's not necessarily a bad thing; Clive Cussler has his successful formula, and uses it (as Hiaasen does his) to write good, suspenseful books. Heck, most of Dickens' books are somewhat formulaic. In Tourist Season, Hiaasen tweaks his formula slightly. As usual, the protagonist is someone (once again a failed reporter) forced into being a private detective by circumstance. There's the femme fatale with whom our hero is romantically involved against his better judgement, who proves that his better judgement was correct. There's the world-weary cop - the returning character Garcia. All of these are well-done variations of Hiaasen standard characters. But the main character in all of Carl Hiaasen books is the same. The main character is always Florida, lush, beautiful, Florida. Home to amazing wildlife and horrid humans intent on raping the land for personal gain. Hiaasen usually pits his heroes against these land speculators or other corrupt characters for which his home state is famous. This time is different, as the villains are a group of Eco-terrorists trying to scare people away from further developing South Florida through a series of dramatic murders of tourists and snowbirds. The motives of these villains are understandable, and ones with whom the author is sympathetic. Skip Wiley, the leader of the Eco-terrorists, even seems patterned after the author himself. They are not the usual grasping, money-obsessed grifters that Hiaasen portrays so brilliantly in other books. They have worthy goals. They are limited by their obsessions to the point of insanity.Hiaasen dispatches his villains to their deaths in his usual brilliantly ironic fashion, but with less glee than usual. The final scene is both satisfying and sad, and all you can do is hope that the eagle decides to fly.

This was Carl Haissen's first solo novel and the first of his that I read. It was a Kindle daily special so I downloaded and read it again. Except for the fact that there were no cell phones, which really would have come in handy, the story is as meaningful now as it was then. And more urgent. He has a weird sense of humor so if you can't appreciate the Chamber of Commerce president choking on a rubber alligator, you might want to pass.I gave it four stars because his fiction writing got even better. I've read most if not all of his books and I follow his columns in the Miami Herald. Journalists like him are becoming as extinct as wood storks.

I found this book interesting and entertaining . When I first downloaded the book and started reading, It was recognizable Hiaasen but different. I then looked for the publishing date ....... 1986, 32 years ago. I have been more familiar with his books of the past 10 years. The funny wackiness of Florida and the colorful characters that inhabit our “Sunshine State”. Always entertaining, funny, and worth the read.

Tourists and civic leaders are being targeted by a rag-tag group of terrorists in Miami. The idea is to rid Florida of developers, bankers and, in fact, everybody. A newspaperColumnist, an inept Cuban bomb maker, a washed up ex-football player and a Seminole Indian hatch their plans. When the ultimate target, the Orange Bowl Queen is discovered, Brian Keyes is hired by her father as body guard and "baby sitter" . It's not all bad. The girl is 19, pretty, and no air-headed pageant winner. Brian comes to respect her and more. The plot is fast paced, the action realistic, and the characters are by turns funny, tragic and idealistic . There are twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages.
