I wrote Jailbreaking the Goddess as a way to remediate what I saw as problematic elements of patriarchal overshadowing (or root rot) within our goddess traditions. This book is born of the cleansing fire of transformation. Jailbreaking is an invitation to us all to grow beyond the patriarchal assumptions that leave many of us outside of the circle. May the new forms offered here carry us a step (or maybe even a few steps) closer to our individual and collective liberation.

This is an excellent book whose time has come round again. As I read it, I was impressed by the author's passion and pleased that she takes on a few of the issues that have annoyed me for years. I've been involved in Wicca/paganism for over 35 years. Through radical Feminist theology, I found my way to more traditional practice. It has bothered me, though, that we rely on a model of female divinity that has remained tied to one's reproductive status. By envisioning a very useful model of the divine female that posits five aspects, the author takes us out of those assumptions.The model is new; the concept is not. However- the concept has not been very accessible for decades, and with the plethora of pagan oriented books that perpetuate the common maiden-mother-crone model, it's past time for a new voice to rise above the din and get our attention. This is that voice. Highly recommended. It will be added to my required reading list.
I received this book by the author before it was released in exchange for a review and I'm so glad that I did. This book spoke to me in a way no other spiritual book has. Over the last few years I have become very disillusioned with Paganism and the labels within it. My practice no longer filled me with joy and I began to search outside of my faith. Reading Jailbreaking the Goddess has awoken me to an entirely new world. I love the creation/idea of the five faces of the goddesses instead of the traditional three-fold goddess which has never been a connection for me. It is based on biological phases that some women never enter and can't fit into. The five faces of the goddesses removes those ideas that are based upon a women's capability or inability to breed and instead focuses on THEM. What a novel concept! I loved how the author encouraged creating your own rituals, beliefs, and concepts based upon what works for the individual and not traditional methods. Social movements that were discussed in this book that have been on my mind lately about how to be inclusive of transgender women in women's only circles and creating those safe spaces and the idea of cultural appropriation. Finally someone in the spiritual community is bringing these ideas out into the open and saying it it is time to take a hard look at our actions and fix the issues at hand. I think that Jailbreaking the Goddess is a book that is going to take a lot of people by surprise because it challenges so many traditional ideas in the Pagan and Witchcraft communities that people have just accepted as fact and instead encourages them to think outside the box and start thinking for themselves. This book is a gamechanger in the magickal community and I think that is is high time that someone put these views out there. Thank you Lasara Firefox Allen for Jailbreaking the Goddess; you have changed this witch's life, practice and outlook and for that I am deeply appreciative.
I am giving Jailbreaking the Goddess a three star review because that is how meany books it should have been broken up into. The first half of the book explores breaking down the three fold Goddess structure into five faces of the Goddess, why such a break down makes sense in today's world, and how to develop a relationship with each five. Like with the other portions of the book I feel Allen could have made this a focus of an entire book. The second focus which is scattered throughout the book is feminist issues plaguing Goddess spirituality including colonization, cultural appropriation, basing feminine worth on reproduction, environment destruction, elderly neglect/ abandonment, and other similar social problems. Coming from a Goddess/ Neo Pagan stand point Allen's views on these issues and proposed fixes are extremely interesting and thought provoking but limited due to space. The third focus of the book is higher level spiritual development such as divine position and visualization techniques. Where these are explained well the book lacks detail to the point that it could be dangerous for an inept to attempt. There is also a dramatic difference int the flow from the books parts. Allen does break the book down into three parts and where is part one is written with a very fast pace and wealth of knowledge brought to the reader with little repeating; this fast pace grows to a stead halt in part three. I personally went from enjoying what I was reading very much to dragging my way though and trying to dig out the useful and insightful information. I am not sure if this was due to size or time constraints but it feels as if it was out of Allen's hands or she became over whelmed with the project. Another place that makes me feel this way is the sections on each Goddess faces are very repetitive, instructions on how to interact with the Goddesses are over repeated or do not differ from face to face. Over all it is a wealth of information and does make you thing about how to make your practice more compassionate. I do suggest it to a feminist social warrior and to Reclaiming Tradition practitioners but not newbies.
I'm only through the first chapter but it's already an incredible experience; I'll update this review as I progress. I never felt I could relate to the maiden, mother, crone goddess format. The five fold goddess framework makes perfect sense to me and feels so liberating. I choose not to be a mother and I always felt invalidated as a woman by the trifold goddess. I literally found more personal validation in the first page of this book than from years of searching in other pagan perspectives. You have got to check this out.
